Has anyone experience weak power steering as a result of the filter?

Just tyring to find out if anyone's ever experienced weak power steering that was definitely the result of a dirty filter....where you noticed an improved after replacing the filter. Bought my 91 300D with 77,000 miles on it, did several drain and fills of the PS reservoir, and replaced the filter. That was 22,000 miles ago. Seems a little soon to replace that filter, but I guess I will just to see what happens.

Doesn't 99,000 miles seem a tad on the early side for the pump to go bad? (if that's the problem)

Yes

But it can happen. I had a neighbor with a Honda Accord that blew the motor at 116,000 miles. This is about half what they usually go, but sometimes you get unlucky. If I were you I'd go ahead and change the fluid and filter again to see if that helps. Maybe you dislodged some old crud that had been hanging around in the system for a while and it managed to plug the filter.

That's my hope. REALLY don't want to spring for a new pump.

Just changed my 124s filter and fluid - used valvoline PS fluid - the steering is lighter and does not lug the engine now.

my car only has 107,000 miles on it and the fluid was dark but with an orange shade. The filter was pretty sludged too. (Good thinking of MB to use a filter). I just wish the MB steering could be as light as a 3rd gen Honda Accord steering - that cars steering is eerie soft but reduces power assist the faster the car moves.
