76 240d won't crank

on the drive home from work today i made a quick stop to drop my daughter off at gymnastics and tried to start it i couldn't get the car to crank. i had just driven about 40 miles and the car had been off for about 10 minutes. the battery is fine and holding a 12v charge (i checked after being towed home) and the ignition switch allows all the other electricals to work. it is acting like i am trying to start it in gear. i plan to try and jump the starter. if that works how do i check to see if the gorilla knob is working correctly?
thanks,
john
