Thumbs up looking at a 300d

I am looking at this car. Heres what i saw firsthand:
It is not mint or perfect.
The dashboard is cracked in several places.
There are minor dings in the paint
The radiator hose is cracked.
Overall looks good interior
drove it and it drove great.
ac blows well but may not be cold.
rear windows do not roll down smoothly
and auto sunroof needs to be assisted when closing
Thanks for any advice
Mercedes 300D 1980 model

IMO: You can find the same car in better condition for far less money.

As pretty as it is, that car is greatly overpriced given the problems it has.

BTW you a fan of foster the people?

What really bothers me with these kinds of ads is the words "mint" and "perfect" and so on.

The poster stated that the dash has cracks.........is this perfect or mint ?

In my opinion it would take a show room condition MB to be perfect or mint.

I have read hundreds of ads like this and looked at many that have stated similar things only to arrive and see many things wrong. It would be so much better if the sellers would simply say, very nice car, not perfect but nice for the year.

Oh well...........

The car is not worth $5k.

You will be better off with a later model, turbodiesel 300d with the later climate-control system.

You like this car. But there will be others. Trust us on that one....

Not worth that price, especially if you plan to drive it at altitude.

Agree, heck I'd sell you my 85 that now has a brand new engine, a nice interior sans the cracks in the dash, new tires/brakes with 165k original miles on the car for 5500. Give it a new paint job and it would look new.

Scratch that... I'm keeping this one for myself...

But seriously, find a good condition one for around 1500 2k and fix it's issue and you would have a better car. Your going to dump just as much into this one anyways.

pumped,
while that car has nice specs, they could EASILY be faked. the odometers on these cars are about 5 minutes away from reading whatever you want them to.
the 80 model is a low power model, and quite loud on the highway.
it's got the notoriously expensive and difficult to keep operating heat/ac controls.
knoxville is not far from my place, swing by this weekend and take a look at what I have!

I hate it when people overstate their cars. It wastes time driving or even calling to discuss. Car should be immaculate for that price. Buy it and you'll soon discover more problems and be reminded that you paid too much every time you turn the key.

A friend has a 240 and continually wishes that it were a turbo. You're to close to the mountains to buy a NA.

I would talk to Vstech also, he knows his stuff and if he has a good one it would be the way to go. Oh, and get yourself an 82 or newer, Turbo. The 85 has the highest stock gear ratio, and of course every improvement ever made to the w123 since it was the last one. You can drive them all day long at 80 effortlessly. It's why I own 2 of them.

From Hunters post, '85 Mercedes Benz 300-D nice looking car, talk it down a little in price and start there.

Listen to Them

Listen to those guys. Further, if there is a good car worth the trip to look at, this club has members all over, and might have ppl who can go and look at cars for you, and you might consider it worth the trip to pick up a car that has been gone over by these guys with their knowledge. I'd gladly look at cars in the Tampa area for you, or get it to someone who can be a better judge, and make arrangements if you got one here, to insure it would make the trip home. Hell, we'd even over you couch space overnight before you hit the road to head up the I-75 home with the new purchase!!!! That's what we're here for.

If you really want to pay $5500 for a car, I'll let you have mine and deduct the money for a paint job!!!! My drive train is solid, and around 200K miles!!! Then I can go looking for a later model, or a 190D, or a 240-D with manual tranny (I miss my white 190D 2.2., 5-spd , , . . . . sniff, sniff).
