OM603 Vacuum pump brands

I noticed on fastlane and elsewhere the Hella Brand and Pierburg vacuump pumps sport the same picture(a pierburg pump).. The Hella pump is cheaper than the Pierburg.

Which is weird, is it the same exact pump but different boxes?

I posted this in another thread, but this is what I got when I ordered a "Hella" vacuum pump a couple of months ago
:

No complaints from me.

I'm suprised it came with a dam style gasket. IIRC those are only needed on early 603s.

I'm tempted to buy the Hella Pump and a non dam gasket. If it comes in as a hella without the updated roller I'll return/exchange it

Does your 603 have an oil sprayer for the VP? If not it needs the dam style gasket.

No idea, it's an '87 so it's clearly not an early 603

There's probably a better way to find out then how I did it... starting the engine with the vac pump off and coating the radiator in oil

gsxr has an '87 300D that requires a dam gasket based on engine, chassis or VIN. Jeremy's '87 300D has an earlier build date.

My '87 300D was built in July 1986 so it is fairly early but others have quoted build dates as early as April 1987.

In 2008 I bought a "BTAP" vacuum pump from an eBay seller to replace my factory original pump. The box said "Germany" but it didn't say "Made in Germany" on either the box or the part so I have my doubts. It's definitely not a Pierburg. It has a sealed bearing and so far (3+ years and 24,000 miles) has been trouble-free.

My saved pictures show the new pump came with the "dam" style gasket. As I recall, I removed the timing chain basket when I did the install. There's a lot of good discussion in the thread "How to replace a 603 vacuum pump" in this forum.
