Below 1980 questions ?

I read all I can here but would like to have these questions sort of all in one thread for me to digest if possible.

I love the looks of the below 80s models but am confused about what the experts (most here but me) think of the older models and if they shy away, why ?

I hear mention odometer is usually not correct on older models and something about a 5 digit type rolling over many times etc.

I hear mention of certain mechanical issues on older models that can't be fixed.......or may be hard to fix.

What year is it the body type changes ?

What models is these 2 below and could they be as good as my 81 and 82 ?

1979 Mercedes 300d

1977 Mercedes 300D Non Turbo Diesel, WVO, Biodiesel RUNS GREAT

Now this is a beautiful style, just love the headlights...would it be hard to keep up ?

Thanks for any help.

The d's were non-turbo in those years, which is a drawback as far as I am concerned and they have the evil servo climate control system.

The W123 body was made from 1977 to 1985 so they all look basically the same.

Both of these could be just as good as your other cars... neither of those you posted are turbos so they will be slower and they will both have the problematic climate control (read expensive and frustrating) The 79 looks nice and seems to have low miles however the odometers on these cars are prone to slipping and failure so you will need to go by the condition of the rest of the car if it doesn't have any records. Personally I stay away from the older 300D models because of the climate control issues and the lack of a turbo. If I want to drive a slug I will drive my 77 240D

The last picture is of a late production W114 gasser. The diesels were the W115 chassis which was visually almost identical. I don't generally consider a gas powered Mercedes to be worth the trouble, but I would love a manual transmission W115 diesel.

The older model in your picture can drive very nicely. Hard to find one in really good condition. They are even more rust prone than the newer ones I believe.

I think you might be thinking of the W115 1974–1976 with OM617 engine
