300D Jump Start?
 

I have a 1984 Mercedes 300D that the starter is bad on.
I want to get this car to the shop for repair.
I have been told if I get it rolling 25-35 MPH and drop into low it would start does anyone know if this is correct

You'll still need the glow plugs. You will have to syncronise the glow plug time out with the hill.

Woah............ you can get the Automatics to start with a rolling start?!?!?


I though you could only do that with a Manual (I've had to do it with my Jetta, it was kinda fun) ;)

I am equally suprised that you can roll start an automatic, however, unless the only way to get to the store and buy a starter is to do this, it hardly seems practical. Maybe if you live on top of a huge hill and work on top of another, you could save the price of a starter.....

M.B.(at least the early eighties) transmissions have a rear pump like found on some of older American auto transmissions which could also be pushed or pull started.However I think I would be a little carefull droping it into first at thirty.You should be able to find brief directions in your owners manual....

Also keep in mind that neither your power steering or power brakes will work until AFTER the engine is turning over. I'd want to be REALLY careful.

After I got my 300d I was shocked in the manual there is instructions for bump starting the car, it involves towing the car for a few miles in neutral to warm up the transmission. check your owneers manual.

If you don't have your manual let us know, we can provide the info included to bump your car off. It does involve some towing to get the fluid moving and perhaps a few tries to get the torque converter filled with fluid, but it will bump over and with luck, start for you. As mentioned, if the battery is good it will need to be used to glow the system before engaging the car into gear to speed the starting process. Also as mentioned, everything is manual, steering, brakes until the car actually starts and is running. Hey, for a $150 here on site you can buy the starter and within an hours time have it installed. Beats paying the garage $250 plus labor for the same starter, or one that's rebuilt to boot.
