I liked the Smokey Yunick articles the best.

I always liked the Gus Wilson stories in Popular Science. Gus, who ran the Model Garage, would fix a customer's mystery car problem every month and often solve their personal problem as well.

The stories were very well written and did a lot to stoke my interest in auto mechanics as a kid.

I remember reading those articles too:).

One of those Model Garage stories involved a tire which only went down intermittently ..... it turned out that the rim was bent just enough that only when the tire was parked in a certain position would it leak.... in real life it is those kinds of mysteries which can drive you crazy...

The cars where much simpler then and so where the times. Still some of the problems and repairs real or otherwise that he wrote about would have left the average guy in a dillema.

Nobody even today likes to locate some of the truly intermittent problems. It seems to remain an almost art form to nail some of them down.

Intermittent problems are great about avoiding happening anywhere near your test equipment...

Yea I saw that.

I've been thinking about it and now that I've put some thought into it I think the early 90's (especially the 95 models) 124 diesels are the worst thing that MB has ever sent to the American market. I would recommend to anyone considering purchasing one to NOT do it. They will cause you all kinds of problems, will leave you stranded, parts are expensive and they are nothing but trouble. I have two and they cause me all kind of grief:eek:.

Another neat article.

The hipsters drive volvos where I'm from. My buddy used to sell them like hot cakes but now technology is getting cheaper and less people are buying the old beaters. I'm going to be very cuban about my diesel.
