Unhappy Wiper Assembly '84 300D

We have a 1984 300D and recently the passenger wiper arm disconnected from the wiper assembly. My husband was able to pop it back on but it doesn't stay on for too long. We were going to get another wiper assembly and just replace that but the two front vents that you take off to get to the assembly is a really tight fit and my husband can't see what he's doing in there once he puts his arm in there. I was wondering if anyone has had a similar problem like this and maybe knows a better way to access the wiper assembly? We love the car she has over 399,000 miles on her and it would be a shame not to be able to use the car because we can't fix the wipers Any help would be greatly appreciated!

They're held in with those plastic rivets. You may be able to drive out the center and retrieve it to be used again. The new ones from the dealer were cheap.

Do you mean the plastic pieces that hold on the vents on the hood? Those are okay the wiper arm is disconnecting from the wiper assembly.

If necessary, just replace wiper assembly with one from the yard. Or, I'm sure John has one from his myriad of cars that he has to get rid of. If you go with used, get the motor. Then you'll have a spare. Use rain-x in the interim. No need to consider trashing a car because of a wiper.

I'm using rain-x but I'm more worried about driving in the sleet and snow with no wipers, the salt from the road getting on the window and when the windows are cold the rain-x leaves a temporary fog when I do use the wipers. If it was just me I wouldn't worry but I'm driving with my kids.

Is there maybe an easier way to get to the wiper assembly and change it out? Other than the vents in the hood. If he can't see what he's doing how is he going to attach the new wiper assembly, is there something we're missing maybe? My inspection expires in March and I don't think it will pass the safety inspection without working wipers.

Once you get the cowl vents removed, you'll see how easy it is to replace the wiper linkage.

There is no other access.

The center plate between the wipers is what needs to be removed to access the wiper linkage.

You will however have to remove the wiper arms, then the plastic vents as was laid out in the link Toomany mbz posted in post #2.

Raise the wiper arm, hold the black plastic cap, then lower the wiper and the cap will lift up. then remove the 13mm nut and wiggle the arm to remove it off the splines.

then punch out the centers of the pins holding the plastic vents on, then lift out square part. the vent will lift up from the front edge. one of the center pins will probably fall into the large rubber drain tubes. one on each side. put something under them to catch the pin.

Lift the hood, and you will see 4 small round connectors in a horizonal row. punch out the center of these also, and pull out the round part.

The center plate will lift off to reveal the wiper linkage and wiper motor.
Be gentile lifting the plate, there is some sticky foam under it sort of holding it down. pry up too quickly or hard will bend it.

If you remove the linkage and wiper motor, be sure to take pictures first, this will ease the frustration of trying to figure out why the wipers are not wiping aross the windshield correctly.

I had them connected wrong, and they wanted to go down first, then up about 1/2 way.
Had to go to PNP and take one apart to see where I went wrong.

^ Yes, the center piece needs to be removed too, under the vents you should see a couple of screws that hold it in place also.

Thank you! That's what we needed to know, we didn't know about that center plate! Thanks so much!
