In addition to the obvious linkage adjustment issues, a common culprit is the "ball joint" (aka throttle bushing) on the firewall. The "ball" disintegrates after 25 years, resulting in lots of "lost motion."

Issues solved! I adjusted the linkage which actuates the injection pump and what a difference. The car drives excellent!!! Accelerates faster and seems to shift smoother.
