Winter tires/wheels 82 300d

I'm looking for a set of wheels and winter tires for my 82 300d. I've looked on tirerack. com, but the only wheels that they have are bigger, newer style alloys for $107 a pop. Is there somewhere I can get a steel 14" rim mounted with snows?

thanks,
marc

no, but if you felt like driving down here and assisting me, I'll put a pair of bunts in your trunk no charge!

I appreciate the offer, but NC is a pretty long haul from CT. I'll keep you in mind though. Might be time for a vacation.

well it's starting to turn cold here, supposed to hit 39 tonight... high of 60 I believe. nice and sunny though. I've got two sets of steel rims with matching lugs, and 8 sets of bunts...
I've even got a set of 15" 30mm offset rims, not bunts but they fit the 123's

check with the local tire store. The ones here always have cheapo steel wheels for snow tires.

These'll fit - 4 studded snow tires & wheels-Mercedes Benz

Price isn't bad - Mercedes OEM 15" mag alloy wheels 5x112 ; make sure offset (ET XX) is 25mm or less.

They're not 14"s but fewer and fewer cars on the road roll on 14"s.

Be sure to get lugs that work with different style wheels.

Almost always there are MB rims on Craigslist around here. Lots have snow tires on them.

I just love how this set of rims is supposed to fit "560SL 560SEL 420SEL 300D 300E 300TE "

at least TWO different sets of rims are needed for these vehicles... nice to know which car they came from...
the 4.75" backspacing makes me lean towards a 124... (no they will not fit a 123...)

Tires

I noticed last month's consumer reports rated the different tires for all performance, including for snow and ice. You might want to check it out and buy accordingly. Also rated in there were two different models of Michelins, and they both rated well. I know that the Michelins come in your size, although you probably want the wider ones (195 or 205s) for better traction. They also rated other tires such as Continental and Hankook, which also rated very well, and might be cheaper.

What's wrong with the rims you have now? Are they bent, or is it time to replace them due to ugliness, and you've decided that since they have to come off the car, may as well replace them at the same time???

I think he wants a separate set to keep his snow tires on so he doesn't have to get his tires remounted twice a year.

Winter footwear for a 123 or 126

For wheels, I am surprised you can't track down a used set of 14" original Bundts for an affordable price. Even in the wilds of central BC I was able to locate two local sources who sold me the three I needed (spare tire in the trunk makes number 4) for $75 each Canadian. I went to my Mercedes indie who has several parts cars out back and there you go. In the US you will get a much lower price but by the time I pay shipping it simply isn't worth it to import low cost parts like used wheels.

For snow tires I opted for studded Kumho Izen KW19's. They are noisy as heck but affordable and have good winter grip ratings. Nokian manufacture some fantastic non-studded and studdable winter tires but they are getting over priced in BC as one retailer has a monopoly on the product

For sure Kumho, Nokian and several others (Good year as well?) all make winter tires in 14" sizes. You need to go somewhere that knows tires - don't expect such knowledge at some big box operation like Walmart or Costco. if Tirerack, one of our sponsors, doesn't have product there are alternative online tire suppliers a plenty in the US if you do a Google search. I found a great source for 14" Thule snow chains that way too.

Maybe a set of junk-yard rims would work for the tires, and keep them stored for winter.

Thanks for all that input! We got hit by a freak snowstorm on saturday, lost power, and haven't got it back yet. I wasn't ignoring everyone, I promise. I want a set of rims with them so I don't have to go to a shop to have my snows put on. Was hoping I could find a place to get both, and get them mounted, balanced and delivered ready to go. I don't want to pay for alloys for winter use, so I was looking for steel rims. Thanks for your input, I'll stop by the local tire shop and poke around online a little more. Thanks!
