617 IP timing (specific question)
Hello all. 1984 300SD. When you have the IP out of the car and you're preparing to put it back in what should be the relative position of the first two cam lobes (visible through the oil filler cap) to confirm that the 24 degrees on the balancing disc is 24 BTDC?

Both valves will be closed for the firing stroke. So, the cam lobes should be pointing more or less up and not pressing any valves down.
360 degrees opposite would be before TDC on the exhaust stroke, and you'd see the cam lobe pushing down on the exhaust valve. Hope this helps. -dan

They should point away from the rocker arms, somewhat upward and/or toward the left.
That confirms that you are in the compression stroke of the first cylinder.

Thanks guys. That's what I suspected. I'm waiting for a part to come in the mail from Phil. Small surprise, it's coming from Germany and might take a while. Phil is the MAN!
