ahh, so I caused the problem

So, it turns out I unknowingly caused a fuel restriction (and low power) by buying cheap generic prefilters instead of the only slightly more expensive correct one. Fuel passage was about 1/3 the size in the generic filter. Finally bought the right one and behold, the slumbering beast woke up! Went from zero smoke to rolling coal! I love it!

Anyone else chase their tails looking for a problem they didn't even know they caused?

And what were the symptoms? Was there another thread describing the problem?

this is a great post... if only it was on the end of a problem thread.

is this on your car with the transmission woes, or another issue?

I'd like a bit of backstory on what you've done to find this problem please!
thanks.

I have had this happen if a cheap prefilter is used. In my case, the paper element in the prefilter collapsed, probably under the suction of the lift pump. I learned just how much the lift pump can suck. The symptoms were very similar to a blocked filter. Light throttle ok, trying to go up hill would soon run out of go. I guess that is what the OP was experiencing. Probably needs the strainer cleaning as well.

interesting - maybe I have a similar situation, just for me as life serves it would be the tank strainer. I cant get my car to blow out smoke even at full pedal, engine at full song.

Nobody beats the fun I had due to the ignorance of an aftermarket primary:

It's a good read..........although you already know the outcome.

Bought the car this summer, my first turbo diesel, last one had no turbo. Remember commenting that i could really feel the car take off when the turbo kicked in on the road test. Buy the car, service it and a bunch of "post car purchase" maintenance (fuel pressure regulator etc).

Not really impressed with the performance anymore. Low power, hills were a nightmare, drive it as is. Search the forum, start to look for more performance. Tweak the alda, no smoke, further tweaking, no smoke, max it out, still no smoke, no performance gains either. Further reading revealed people are getting much longer than I am on my fuel filters. Assume the micron rating was too fine causing a restriction and premature plugging. Purchase the CORRECT filter, compare the two, this is where I find the inside diameter of the spigots on the correct filter are 3x that of the incorrect one. One interesting note is the incorrect filter was actually quite a bit larger in overall diameter.

You were lucky to run it down quickly. It is a given installing a new filter one does assume it is not a problem and looks elsewhere.

As mentioned post the brand of the bad one if possible so members can avoid them.

Spigots? There are no spigots on the filters. In your first post you mentioned pre filter, which should be a plastic screen type that is very coarse, probably greater than 500 microns. Did you put one in that's a paper element type? Those are around 20 to 30 microns, way too fine and restrictive for a prefilter. BTW, the pre filter has barbs, not spigots.

Also not sure what you mean by spigots. A spigot is a vent plug or a faucet fitting.

Did someone sell you the inline vacuum system filter in place of the fuel prefilter? I only ask as I actually saw one installed on a car (in place of the fuel prefilter) in a pick and pull once....

Either that or it's something like the old inline filters used on carbureted engines. I had a Volvo 142 with dual SUs that used an inline filter very similar in appearance.

The filter was a generic off the shelf universal clear plastic inline filter. by spigots I'm talking about the barbs, nipples, whatever you want to call them.
