Remove Console on 1977 240D

How does one remove the console on a 1977 240D?

Hi Hippie_Elmo,I removed the console on my 300D to replace a couple of lite bulbs in the heater controls. The Haynes manual gives a good description. The 240D is a little different from mine but here goes:Remove front carpets, carefully pry the console switches out and unplug.remove ashtray mount and unplug the connector, remove gearshift cover screws then unplug any switches in the cover.Pull the gearshift lever cover off, remove the radio, pull off the heater control knobs(this depends on the type of controls).Remove the screws from the front tunnel, one screw from the tray at the rear, the two bolts at the rear of the tunnel that hold the seatbelt brackets. Now it should be loose:D .Now comes the fun part.Remove the seat back cover to access the bolt for the armrest, remove the armrest, push the seats back and recline the seat. Now carefully wrestle the console out, watch the front tunnel part of the console as it's kind of wobbly.Whew,I did all that to replace a couple of lite bulbs:rolleyes: If your 240 doesn't have an armrest it should go a little easier, but be sure nothing gets caught as you extricate the console.Good luck:)

To replace lamps in the heater controls on a W115 you can remove the radio speaker, and get to them from the top.

The upper console cover is held on by two plastic nuts under the dash and a screw behind the grille at the bottom center. You will have to pull the radio, I think, and remove the AC control knob (it pulls out), then remove the lock ring and push it back.

Take care with the "wings" on the front -- the entire cover is foam covered with vinyl and is easy to break!

I have the W123, I was able to get the gear shifter piece of console off. You just need to remove the screws in the ashtray and then remove the two screws hold the plastic cover off. Does the whole piece come off? How do you remove the climate control cover?

On the climate control,it has a trim piece that's pushed on,beneath that is a plastic cover held on with 2 screws, with that off I think you can get some of the bulbs.they're tiny and push in,to get out push a piece of vacuum hose or WHY onto the bulb then pull it out. There are still a few bulbs inside,if your's is like mine, hope not;) .I have the auto climate controls.post back if need be.:)
