I like this complaint:

"On October, 26, 2008 I brought my car to the dealer in Greenwich, Ct because it was male functioning..."

so sexist.

I notice most of the complaints are for post '96 cars, mainly in the 'crap' period from then up until around last couple of years.

That web site is all the new junk, not any of our reliable cars. Go Diesel

My 240D might be slow, but sure is a reliable old car. same with my 85 300D.
Nothing is perfect, but why go into debt for a constant pile of problems just over the horizon?

Tragically even kai and hyudais latest top line version models may turn out to be better cars at half the price. They are now attempting to compete head to head with several top line cars apparently.

Right now buying a new mercedes car would make me question the buyers judgement anyways. There are just too many alternatives out there that have proven their worth beyond question to occupy the spots they have and bring the prices they do. Some are even backed up with decent service if and when required.

I dropped by a couple of volkswagon dealers last week. Primarily to establish how much factory warranty can be purchased beyond the norm. The wife wants another new tdi and the extremely good crash resistance plus being the only car on the market at present in my opinion to have good rustproofing from the factory. The nemisis of some good cars up here in the rustbelt is a serious issue. This has swayed me against my better judgement to some extent towards volkswagon again.

I specifically wanted to know would they cover the car warranty wise if my wife got a bad batch of diesel. It is rumoured the complete injection setup is too easily destroyed on the newer ones.

They hemmed and hawed but did say the newer setup does total the engine if gas is accidentally put in the tank. I just got the feeling they may have made their new setup too sensitive to issues that used to be not particularily good but easily manageable. We would dump the car just before the overall extended warranties purchased expired.

Plus would need in writing that they were liable for the possible issues with an oversensitive fuel injection system before considering their cars. I know we can buy so many more brands of reliable cars out there going in.

What really pissed me off is that that one dealer wanted the same dollar for a 2011 as a 2012 new. They really must think all their customers are totally brain dead.

Another problem was their lack of available stock with the standard transmission. There is no proof they have got the horrible lack of durabilty dealt with in their automatic transmissions yet. I have had a nagging feeling that volkswagon just cannot really make up their mind if they want to sell cars in the north american market. Now their diesel is quite a bit faster than their gas cars. They went for more horespower and torque rather than increasing fuel milage. Increasing the milage per gallon with less power would have served them better I suspect in this market.

We can only basically drive the speed limits up here in Canada. The fines mind the social responsibility just prohibit otherwise. If you get even one speeding ticket your insurance premiums jump as well.

VW's TDI

Love It. [BUT, not the CDI type self immolating injection system]
(AND all the Cheap Plastico interior Parts.)

Thanks, Barry1234 for the IP and system info.
[YES, do steer Clear of the VW Automatic Transmission equipped models!!!]

Against my advice,
One of the Younger Brothers has just got a New Jetta TDI so we'll see...
(It's a MANUAL)[and he drives about 30K miles per year.]

VW Dis-Remembered ALL it's Q.C. lessons sometime in the tail end of the Last
century.

I had a '85 Golf Diesel... Could not KILL it!

Not sure why the kias and hyundais are getting so much praise except that they are a cheaper car for what the competition offers? Last week my brothers girlfriends 2010 kia turned 96,000 kms and the transmission is done. The warranty runs out at 100,000 kms. She was crying when she phoned for a ride. To me....anyway...It seems like she just got it yesterday, cause I have never owned a car newer than 88' A couple years ago girlfriends step mother had to make picket signs and walk in front of the kia dealership to get them to honour the warranty on her 2008. She said she won't buy another.

If you can recognize the quality it is in this order for me... Mercedes, Nissan, Honda, Toyota. Probably like everything else for the most part you get what you pay for. I can't speak for the service dept of my choices cause I do my own work and I have never owned a honda or toyota.but I have seen under the hood and I have driven my bro's 2004 honda civic a few times .

I had two nissan stanza's before the Mercedes affliction and loved them. Each one had over 500,000kms on original auto tranny's and motors. One left here running and one got stripped for parts due to the tranny going south....the motor was still good on that one and I swear it could have gone another half million kms. I never had to do anything on those nissans except the plugs and cap/rotors oh and a thermostat on one of them. paid less than six hundred bucks for each.
Don't know how true it is but I heard that the forged steel crank in the Nissan Titan is good for 1000 horsepower compared to the Dodge Hemi's cast crank at 450hp. over twice the quality in engineering to the Nissan.
From what I've heard the kia's etc. are'nt as great if you talk to some owners and the prices are coming up to par with the rest, so they are'nt even staying true to that. If hell froze over and I bought a new car I'd go with the Nissan over the kia.etc and these days would maybe not pay much more.
I like this by Charmalu, I feel the same way

I owned a string of Saturn DOHC sedans and had good service from them for the price. Never let me down getting to work. People kept running into me (long story).

My last one got smashed so I went to the auto auction with my insurance settlement. I was gonna buy another Saturn but some other guy outbid me.

Then, they rolled up this little blue 240D. I don't know what I was thinkin but I bought it and never regretted my decision.

No vehicles have been made to the standards of the W123, same foes for the indestructible OM616/617.

The computer finally allowed me into the Mercedes owners complaints site. It sure does not sound like the newer Mercedes are doing so good. It also sounds like the dealers are not too good with service in some areas.
These older one's are great. (pre 85) for me anyways. Parts are'nt that bad either. I have a good parts guy at the Mercedes dealership in town, unless it is one of the expensive parts, then I just go to NAPA.
I feel bad for some of the people on the complaints site. It seems that they are'nt getting what they paid for.
I am grateful for forums such as this after reading that stuff. Also appreciate the past engineers that designed our older cars. There could probably be a complaint site for every car manufacturer. Seems to me like the manufacturers today design flaws into there stuff.... whereas the older stuff was more competitive in the reliability dept. Kinda backwards.

Gurkha, what's the real quality like on those Indian 616/617's? I wouldn't mind having a turbo 616 in my 240D. And, what is the price like?
