Need advice on removing 84, 123 Blower Motor Fan

Blower Motor is not turning.
I get Zero when I Ohm out the Motor Terminals so I believe my Motor Brushes need to be replace.

Removed the Motor from the Frame and found that on my particular Motor the Brushes are located in the Front of the Motor instead of the Rear like the ones in the DIY Section.

I would like to pull off the Plastic Fan.

I tried supporting the Fan and using a Punch on the Motor Shaft but it looks like if I used enough force I am more likely to crack the Fan then get it off of the Motor Shaft.

My current thought is to cut a slot through the Plastic on each side of the Shaft (and along the shaft) to loosen the Fan.

But, someone may have done this before and has a better solution.

Added: last pic; this appears to be an aftermarket Blower.

Unless you are just curious about repairing the motor yourself, I would pick a complete blower motor up at a local pick-n-pull yard. They are generally an easy find, and if the yard is reasonable, you shouldn't pay more than $15-$20.

I'm not sure you will get it off without breaking it.

JimmyL has a good one in this thread. also Deliveryvalve has a link.

X2 on just removing one from the JY. just 3 8mm bolts and one Phillips screw and a plug, and she drops right down. I have pulled several, and if I get a few years from them, so what. I have a back up one in line. about $30 out the door.

I do not think I will be going to any Junk Yard for several months.

Back on Memorial Day I fell and broke one of my Hips. They screwed that together (left part of the pic) but after several months it did not heal up.
On Sep, 28th they replaced my Hip with an Artificial Hip (the right part of the pic).

So I am in the process of recovering; meaning as little stress as is possible on my Hip.

While I am sure cutting a slot on each side and length wise of the Fan where the shaft presses into it will work. (I have seen it that way on other Blower Fans.)
I wanted to see if there is another method that would work.

Also the shaft on My motor appears to be round on the Fan End instead of "D" shaped like I saw in the DIY Threads.

d-911,

If you cut a slot down the side, perhaps with a dremel, what will keep the fan from freewheeling on reassembly? I would think that some moderate heat on the fan and fully supporting the fan might allow the use of a hammer and a 1/4" punch on the shaft end to separate the two.

Also sorry to hear about your hip problem, that can surely be no fun!!

you need to fit the motor into a hole in a table, then tap the shaft and it drops right out.
you cannot just support two sides, the ENTIRE blower needs to be supported to drive it out.
I POUNDED and POUNDED on mine before cutting a hole in a table, and it came out without difficulty.

Yes it is always a good idea to know how you are going to assemble something before you start cutting!

JB Weld on assembly.

I have also seen similar Blower Fans held in place with spring type Clamps. Because the Clamps are light weight and close to the Center they do not throw it offl balance enough to matter.
Or I could use 2 clamps to balance things out.

Thanks; a minute ago I cut the Slots.
However, I think I am going to also find as you said something to support it all the way around also.
It might be that I have a Wheel in my Garage that has a suitable hole in it.

OK I got the Fan off.

But, the Brushes on this Blower are Bronze and they do not appear to be worn out as there is still Spring tension on them.
I tried some Jumper Wires hooked to a Battery and even squeezed on the Brush carriers to push the Brushes on the Armature. No turning at all.

I probed around with the Ohm Meter and the current Ground Brush is not conducting like it should.
The Brushes are connected with a crimped Metal sleeve. On the Ground Brush above the crimp shows signs of overheating.
That could mean that under the Crimp the Brush wires are not making good contact. (Or is there a poor ground somewhere down further in the circuit?)

First pic shows overheated; you can see it on the fist Coil of the Copper wire.

The other pic shows the posative Brush connection.

I am going to see if I can use an Aligator clip directly on the Ground Brush and jumper it on a bettery. If the Motor turns like that the connection at that Brush must be no good.

Ah ha! You're having fun too

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/305936-everybody-better-take-care-their-123-blowers-4.html

I've been taking my non AC fan to bits recently.

I had serious trouble getting the fan off and I ended up damaging the bearings.

Even by holding the motor in your hand and tapping the end of the shaft I found on my motor that the whole shaft running through the armature shifted - this is what eventually killed my bearing. Probably too much grunt was used!

So if you've got any tips for finding replacement bearings...(!)

I read some of that thread yesterday. That is why I was not happy to find that my Motor Brushes were up front instead of the rear.

Pic of the slots I cut. However, apprently the slots did not go all the way through to the shaft. (On mine the Shaft is splined.)
Also, my Blower is not made by Bosch.

As it turned out after putting a blob of Solder over the overheated wires where the Brush Wire connects to the Blower Wires the Motor works now.

So I am not going to be taking apart the Motor as the Brushes look OK.

However, there is a lot of crap inside of the Motor; I need to get some compress Air down there a blow it out.

After that I will drip some Oil onto the Bronze Spherical type Bearings and let it soak in and re-apply.

Pics below. Slot cut into Fan and the soldered area.

How are you planning on clamping the fan back in place now that the slots have been cut? Are you just going to glue?
