$40 is too much to spend when spending many thousands to prevent a potential disaster purchase?
Besides that, CarFax caught on to this and frowns upon it highly.

Carfax & auto check are not worth it
I have had several Carfax and an Autocheck report done on vehicles. The one common element of them is that they were wrong about various facts regarding the vehicles involved. They are no substitute for a thorough inspection. They only report what they can find in public records. Do your homework , learn the common failure points for the vehicle in question , look at several vehicles to get a feel for the problems, look at good ones , look at crappy ones. Within a short time you will get a sense of how to judge what is worth buying. Get an AAA inspection or similar
Vehicle Inspection Service | BCAA This will tell you a lot more than a piece of paper supplied by someone who has never even seen the Car. Cheers Dan

Carfax
Thanks Dan, my main concern was a possible salvage title.
