Turn the key to engage glow cycle, then, turn key as if to start, but just let the starter crank and crank and crank until air purges from the system. Mine takes about 15 seconds of constant cranking before it fires up. If you changed your fuel filter, best to fill it with fresh fuel then reinstall it (full). Then crank and crank and crank.

2X on priming the fuel filter,

Just limit the cranking to 30 sec. and let the starter cool for 3-4 minutes between tries. Kills me, I am so impatient.

Good Luck

best as said to get the filter full of fuel, then crank- once it fires keep the revs up until it runs smoothly- if you let off the gas it can be very hard to start again.

remove filter top bolt, wedge something under filter, fill it with fuel from the hole where the bolt was, install bolt back, remove pre-filter intake pipe and connect some sort of pipe to it and suck on it, when fuel comes to the pipe, remove and connect to the prefilter, crank engine. It will start with some bucking - but do not let go of the accelerator and do not let it drop below 1800 rpm till the engine fires smoothly.

did that and it started on first try without killing the battery.

on my old 1.6VW I could hook a pump to the OUT line of the injection pump and suck it full of fuel. Easy startup. I wonder if pulling fuel through the outlet line at the filter would work.

Once you "think" its running, keep cranking an extra 2-3 secs. Won't hurt the starter.

A +1/2 full fuel tank helps, as does having the nose end pointed slightly downhill. Jack the rear if its sitting nose up.
