Do I NEED new injector heat shields?

HI EVERYBODY!

I'm having the injectors on my 240d pop tested by a most gracious member of this forum, and I was planning on re-installing them with new heat shields when they where returned to me. I need my car to get to phoenix for thanksgiving, but the problem I have is that the heat shields I ordered from Diesel Giant never showed up! If I ordered another set, they probably wouldn't show up in time. So here's my question if you haven't already guessed it:

Do you think it would be unwise to use my old heat shields for a couple hundred miles? I would be using my torque wrench, but I know these things supposedly warp. The shields that are in there now are relatively new. What do you guys think? Should I borrow my roommates Corolla?

Thanks!

Seth

When I got my Volvo Diesel (it uses the same Injector Body and Heat Shields) I rebuilt the Injectors; I did not known the Heat Shields needed to be replaced.
I drove around for over a year on the old Heat shields.

I managed to drop a Screwdriver into the Timing Belt while the Engine was idleing; resulting in some damge to the Valves.
The Head had to be removed and the Gasket Kit came with new Heat Shields. At that point I realized the should have been change.

There was no damage done to anything by reusing the Heat shields.
So my opinion is that you could reuse the Heat Shields as a temp solution and install the new Heat shields when you get them
The Heat Shields for the old VW Rabbit Diesels can be used; if you have a VW Dealer near you.

NAPA Auto Parts sells the Heat Shields but I bet they will be $3-$4 each; but then you would be done with the job.
One of the online parts sellers has the Heat Shields at $1.27 each. The next time you need some Oil or Transmission Filter to bring the cost of the order up enough to get the free UPS shipping you could get some heat shields. (In 4 years the price on the Heat Shields has go up $0.30).

Since I have 2 vehicles that use them I have at least 25 new ones. This seems excessive but the price is going up on them and I figured if I wanted to I could sell them off later.
I can also remember buying only enough Heat Shields to complete the job I was doing and dropped one of the New Heat Shields and lost it; had to reuse the Old one until I got another newone.

I find Diesel Giants prices on stuff to be too much!

In a pinch, you can re-use a heat shield by doing this:

Find and place a ball bearing slightly larger in diameter than the hole in the heat shield, support the bottom of the heat shield with a thick flat washer and place it in a vise and "un-crush" the heat shield so that there is approx a 1 mm gap when the heat shield is placed on the injector. Clean the mating surfaces of the heat shield and injector nozzle with WD-40 and a rag untill there is no more carbon before install.

X2

Here is a visual aid.

This is a crushed head shield.
Notice That there is no gap between the head shield and the injector holder.

This is a un-crushed head shield.
Notice the gap.

Very nice picture indeed - any idea of the gap between an injector and a shield?

(Or do I need to venture out into my cold cold garage and find an injector and a heat shield and a set of feeler gauges? - grumble grumble)

You might try your local parts houses, or a Bosch shop if there's one in your area. The shields are common to a lot of cars that use Bosch fuel injection, including Volkswagen diesels.

If the shield doesn't seal you can get carbon in the injector threads, which will make removing the injector in the future difficult.

every place has em, its just that they all have to order them. Even the dealership. Most run of the mill auto parts stores don't know what the hell i'm talking about. Which I find sad. But yeah, time is of the essence here.
I'll try more places tomorrow. By the way, Diesel Giant doesn't seem to give a *crap* about this, just a little fyi. I'm sure it's not their fault, but they just aren't being helpful.

That's a shame. They're less than a buck each. They could throw four in a priority mail envelope, send them to you, and have a happy customer for maybe $10 total investment.

Won't fastlane be fast enough then?

there should be no gap. uncrushed, the shield is resting on the nozzle with a gap around the perimeter of the injector body. crushed they should be touching all around.
