Question om616. re-ring?

Hey guys. New to MB and new to the site.

Just bought an 83 240 and it is great.

Little too much blowby and oil consumption for me, though. Gonna have the valves adjusted and serviced by the local guru next week.

I have read as many rebuild threads as i can find, and haven't seen anyone talk about just honing and installing new rings.

This is a pretty simple motor. Can we not do that?

I can`t answer that question, but here are a few threads on rebuilding these engines.

basically if the cylinders and pistons are still within the specs found in the factory service manual then you can re ring. If not within the specs then new liners, pistons, and rings. Do be aware Mercedes liners do not come pre bored or honed.

It is a lot of work to disassemble one of these motors. If it is that worn I suspect you should really plan on doing the liners and rings. The pistons are often good enough to reuse after measuring to see if they meet specs. While apart a valve job is usually needed too. And at a minimum new seals, gaskets and cam chain guides. The chain often can be reused but it needs to be checked for excessive wear.

If you want cheap I would suggest trying to find a good used motor. Going through one is a lot of labor and there are many things which can be done wrongly. Parts are also very expensive.

Good luck!

You really have no idea what can be done until you get it apart and start measuring things.

New round Piston Rings in an oval bore will not work well. You will not know what needs to be doneto the Engine until you take it apart and do some checking and measuring.

In the mean time you might try dumping in some Marvel Mystery Oil into each of the Cylinders through the Injector or Glow Plug Holes and letting it soak for a Week and then repeating the same for another week.
It is cheap and can free up any sticky Piston Rings.
