Mystery Leak on 722.120 Quick Fix:

I built my 722.120 back in 2005 and it has been leak-free until recently. I have been noticing fluid leaking out from under the neutral switch and initially, suspected the selector shaft seal.

When I removed the switch and cleaned the area, there was no leak, even after running the car for 30 minutes on the hoist.

Then, I pulled it into drive.....

Fluid poured from a shaft located in a recessed hole just in front of the selector shaft seal, as shown in this photo:

It appears that this shaft, which does not move in or out when the transmission is shifted from drive to reverse, is sealed with an 'O' ring that requires disassembly to replace.

Pulling the transmission into drive or reverse causes the shaft to shift upward/downward in the case and allows fluid to leak past it.

I know I replaced all the seals when I rebuilt the unit, but I do not recall just how this shaft is sealed. However, I did not want to pull the unit down to change the 'O' ring.

My solution was to drive a common 20mm soft plug flush into the hole after cleaning the area and coating the plug with red Loc-Tite.

The cross member needs to be removed to allow the tail of the transmission to hang down in order to drive the plug, but it only took 15 minutes start to finish on the hoist with a tranny jack. On your back in the driveway will make it tough!!!!

So far, over 500 leak free miles.

Hope this helps...Robert

P.S. We recently moved to So Cal and have limited Internet access, so my replies will be delayed.

Happy Thanksgiving!!!!!

That solution deserves a 'Cuban Mechanic of the Year' award.

Lots and lots of miles and very minimal service because it is serving as a dialy driver for me wife.

I also serviced it at the same time....after 56,000 miles with Type F fluid (what I prefer on 722.120's personally) and there was nothing at all in the pan or filter, and the fluid still smelled new.

I let it down off the rack and put 275 freeway miles on it straightaway...Robert

Why do you run Type-F fluid......thats meant for old Ford trannies needing a high friction fluid.....

I always felt the shift quality was firmer with the higher frictional coefficient fluids. After running Dad's old 722.120 almost 220,000 miles on Type F and finding the clutches and bands still serviceable, I kept on uisng it.

I'm just an odd duck I suppose, but I can detect all the subtle differences from these small changes and like the way it works...Robert

is red loctite wise? I'd think a simple anerobic gasket material would be a better choice... for future service...

Bonjour,

je ne reconnais pas la partie que vous avez trouvée dans la casserole de pétrole. Je n'aurais pas peur. Je ne crois pas qu'ils soient un problème. Je n'ai jamais vu une telle partie dans des 722.

Do you think that the plug will pop out when sufficient fluid builds up behind it? My 95 has a mystery leak too.
