Aux pump re-build
So has anyone taken the time to get a break down of what's required to rebuild and Aux water pump? With the cost of these thing's I thought I'd ask this question.
My was acting up and a good soaking in PB blaster and some lube in the rear and front bearings brought it back to life. But for how long. The bearing look fairly common and a new bottom gasket and O-ring seal should not be that hard to source. The trick part is getting the thing apart with the pump impeller pressed onto the motor shaft. Any ideas of what and where to source parts? Thanks.

They don't look very rebuildable to me. If you can find a used one that's been in a car with frequent coolant changes it should be good. It's infrequent coolant changes that get them.

I've had several apart. It's hard to find a good used one and got tired of looking, so I ended up buying new. I did find a good one at one time, but it didn't last long. Have not seen any rebuild parts, and have run across at least two different versions with non-interchangable parts. There is a chance a good cleaning would fix one, but from my experience, antifreeze gets into the motor and ruins the motor. A lot of different years and models used the same pump, so if you have a lot of junkyards in your area and the time, you'll probably find a good one eventually.

I had one that was leaking at the shaft. I took the pump apart and found that there is a nice thrust seal that was in great shape, but the rubber on the OD shrank so it was not tight in the pump housing. I put some sealer around the seal and put it back together, no leak.
Didn't have the motor apart, but I am sure the bearings are standard bearings. Here is a link to some pics I took with the pump half apart. http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/304764-resealed-my-auxiliary-pump-today.html |
