1985 OM617 Head leaks oil

The head on my 85 300D is leaking a small amount of oil at the front corner, near the fuel filter housing, as well as at the back of the motor near the fire wall.

Would it be okay to loosen and re-torque all the head bolts? Should i just try checking the torque on the bolts WITHOUT loosening the bolts? Im thinking it might stop the small leaks.

Thanks

I would check the torque on the head bolts. I haven't looked at the FSM for the 61x series(wish I had kept my hard copy of the FSM) But I think the bolts are torqued down and then angular torque is then used.

Should i loosen the bolt first, and then torque it down to spec?

Im gonna heave to research angular torque, havent heard of that before.

I don't think so. I was told loosening before re-torquing it would more likely make things worse.

I tried this on a 95 E320 wagon, and it did slow down the leak by about 90%. Still wasn't good enough for me so I had it all changed.

Im gonna look into getting the correct torque specs for the head bolts.

Anyone have one of those special 12 point keys to fit the head bolts i can borrow? or can i get one at a local parts or tool place?

I know this is rhetorical, but... let's say you don't loosen them.

What would you do if your torque wrench clicks and does so without any movement? I wouldn't dare try the turn procedure on top of that. Who knows where your bolt preload is after that.

Torque, then turn does decrease the range of preloads if done properly, but, you really need to know what you're doing.

Honestly, I wouldn't bother with trying to retorque them. I can only imagine the world of hurt if you disturb the 'happy balance' between all of the bolts.

Angular torque? Never heard it called that before... Angle control or "turn of the nut" are more appropriate.

it's called an XZN or triple square. You can find them at autozone, napa, discount auto.

But I'd invest in something made by craftsman at the least for this type of tool or OEM. I am not sure if Snap On or Mac Tools has them.

Sears: Online department store featuring appliances, tools, fitness equipment and more

10mm triple square(long)

Sears: Online department store featuring appliances, tools, fitness equipment and more

10mm triple square(short)

each are about $4 each. Made by VIM and I believe they are made in the USA

Looking on their website they seem to make a lot of XZN/specialty drivers for VW/Audi cars. Glad I don't have one of those things, then I'd have to invest in a ton of XZN drive tools!

yeah, that... "torque to X ft/lbs, then 90 degrees, etc"

I bought one of those tripple square bits from the Mac tool guy when I pulled a head back in 07.

I wouldn`t cheapen out on this tool.
