what is the proper fluid for Power Steering?
Power steering fluid will cause the seals in the steering box to weep oil. make sure that you use ATF dextron.

I just wish they would be consistent. If they insist on power steering fluid for the p/s system, they ought to follow the same logic and put it in their automatic transmissions. |

so... are you two saying dexron III is the proper powersteering fluid? I thought the recommendation in the manual was type F fluid in the PS system, and nobody makes type F anymore...

Type A and type F are commonly found at convenience stores around here.

hmmm. I wonder what I have read about the power steering fluid of choice was talking about? perhaps I imagined it all? prior to this forum, I used atf in every vehicle's power steering pump... unless a specific type was called for. like with honda's...

There is a school of thought that Dexron has properties that cause seals to leak. I don't know if that is true or not, but I have always used Valvoline PS fluid in mine with no problems.

Go with the recommendation of the manufacturer. ATF in the oil is the best sludge engine cleaner . . . .right before they drain the oil for an oil change. Leaving it in the engine WILL result in eaten seals. However, if the manufacturer recommends using ATF in a component, it's because the seals of that component are designed to survive the high-detergent environment . . . like trannies.

Theory was that the Dexron variants had some addatives which made those fluids significantly different from the ATF's of the late 60's / early 70's. Of course, at this point, Dexron is no longer made, so that opens up an entire new can of worms.

I've owned ten vehicles since I started driving. Of those seven have had power steering. I ran power steering fluid in six of them and type F ATF in the Lincoln Town Car that specd it in the owner's manual.
In fleet use, most of the things I work on take 10W hydraulic oil. Hummvees take Dexron.

My handbook book says MB spec 236.2 -
MB 236.2 - Flssigkeitsgetriebele (ATF, Type A Suffix A, Spezifikation 236.2) - Mercedes-Benz Betriebsstoff-Vorschriften Noticed that Febi do two fluids to 236.2 - http://www.febi.com/fileadmin/user_upload/febi/england/downloads/febi_fluids_brochure_GB.pdf yellow CVT and red ATF Dexron....so presumably they both work. cheers
