Speedo and Odometer stopped working

Installed a new speedo cable just prior to installing new motor mounts. Fired the car up (1984 300D) today to test everything. Motor runs very smoothly thanks to the new motor mounts, but the speedo and odometer aren't working......before I installed the new cable, the odo worked but the speedo jerked a lot. any ideas?

That's where I'd start. The trans end is much trickier to get back in properly in my opinion. Make sure both are seated down all way. You might also check that everything looks okay in the trans where the cable goes in.

OK, I'll check it out shortly and report back.

+1

I remember the transmission portion being a PITA on mine. It took some doing to get it just right. At the speedo was a POC. I also had to get all the bends just right to alleviate the bouncing. It is smooth as silk now. Or at least it used to be... I never drive it anymore.

Either the cable is loose or the internal cable is twisted in half. Pull the cable at both ends and see if spinning it with your fingers on one turns it on the other. If not, it's cable time.

OK, reconnected the cable end to the transmission and removed the end from the speedo cluster. I placed a piece of blue painters tape to the end of the square tip and put the car into drive. The tape turned round and round so I know the cable is working properly. I then reattached the cable to the instrument cluster and went for a drive. Still no joy, the speedometer doesn't budge. any ideas?

Are you sure you're getting it in right? I recall you have to have the flats of the cable aligned pretty closely with the hole in the back of the speedometer or it won't go in. You can still get the threaded part screwed on a few threads, but it won't engage. When it goes together right you have to screw the thing on pretty far before it bottoms out.

Well.....it's possible that it isn't installed properly, I'll check it carefully and report back....

did you install a new speedo cable, i guess its possible its broken. Spin one end with your fingers and have someone watch the other end to make sure its moving.
