Will late 70s transmission work in 81 SD?
I need a replacement Xmission for a 81SD and I found a good deal on a rebuilt but he says its from a late 70s model and he can't find the model #722.xxx on the cast. What will and will not be compatible with a 81SD? Thanks, my search on the forum was unsuccessful.

I'd think a 70s car would have a 722.1 not a 722.3

IIRC the number is along the bottom on the passenger side, where the pan meets the case. 722.1 doesn't use vacuum to control shift firmness. You could probably make it work? But I wouldn't when a correct trans isn't so hard to find.

Some of those earlier transmissions are not as robust either.
