Manual Transmission - To Seal or Not to Seal

I am in the process of replacing all of the gaskets and seals on my manual transmission before installing it into my car and I am wondering if I should use any gasket sealant on the thin paper gaskets for the outside covers on the transmission. This is the earlier style (not all aluminum) transmission case. I know in theory if it does not call for any sealant, I should not use any, but those gaskets are mighty thin and a local indy mechanic told me he probably would use a sealant. He recommended a product called hondabond. It is made by Honda and does not harden completely. I am really hoping to hear from someone with practical experience on these transmissions. Ie- I did not use any sealant and still have no leaks after x amount of time. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,

Shane

Permatex Hylomar lets the thin gasket slide into position, without creases and helps seal. Recently used Permatex gray with a paper gasket when mounting a bellhousing on a Perkins, too thick and sticky.
