The OK, I'll restore the 300TD Thread...

So, based on the general input I'm going to restore the 82 300DT I bought instead of parting it out.

I went ahead and bought T Walgamuth's complete black interior and carpet to kick the project off. The carpet will end up in the CD, since it doesn't fit in the DT, but the carpet in the DT is like new anyways.

So I spent the day today removing the VO system, bumpers trim lights etc to ready it for the body shop...

Here is the system out. Make an offer on it if you want it.

I started the standard checklist of things I'll need to do, brakes, front rotors.

Also found what I believe is the sensor wire for the brakes...

The front door seals are toast...

But the rears, and the hatch are in really good shape.

Here is my running list of things I need to get and fix... I'll delete stuff as I get it, or add as I find more..

Set of copper fuses

Rear wiper motor, assembly (the motor actually fell out when I removed the rear panel)

Fuel Door (Need this before I can goto body shop)

4x exhaust hangers

Shifter mechanism. Lots of play in this one. I could actually use 2 of these (one for my CD also)

Air Cleaner Bracket

DASH

All filters Except power steering (found a new unopened one in the car)

Rear corner rubber that goes around bumper, pass side.

Aux water pump. (Currently missing)

2x plastic door locks

Front Window washer bottle

Coolant line for top rear of engine on drivers side (goes into the head)

Bowden cable

B2, (need to figure out everything I need to do this job)

Linkage from the cruse control "V" on the valve cover to the throttle.

Fuse box door and 1 of the holding screws

Radiator shroud clips

Coolant expansion tank. Mines just filthy looking, but functioning.

Mount bolt for Mono Valve.

Hood Liner

Windshield

Passanger mirror

Nicer grill.

A/c compressor, Hi and low A/c lines, all the bolts to secure the A/c compressor,

Top A/C line cut...

Bottom Line also cut...

This is the rear corner rubber for bumper I'm talking about...

I'm still shocked by the lack of rust... in fact I have yet to find any...

Most trim removed... I don't know about removing the trip around the windows, I think it might be better to just tape that off...

In removing stuff I found a lot of neat stuff...

Like the original hazard reflectors...

A box of new lugs, the new power steering filter, bags and bags of switches odds and ends and well, It will take some time to sort... Even the original safety kit and jack.

There was also a 1/2 craftman ratchet and socket for the lugs, plus a really nice extra long set of jumper cables. a half dozen unopened packs of various stuff from mercedes... kind of like xmas I've also recoverd almost 6 bucks in change so far...

There was also a pair of replacement reverse lights for the rear bumper, complete. I already have them back in the bumper.

The other good news is the starter is a new bosh unit, The alternator looks new, It's got a brand new radiator, looks like the throttle control on the firewall is new. The steering box has been rebuilt. I already know the engine was replaced at 180k so under 200k on it, it got a new timing chain 2 years ago, along with new balanced injectors.

The interior should be here around the 11th, I'll get it in and head your way that way I can see what I'm missing.

I've got MANY parts left over from the tear down of Brown Betty.

Things that come to mind are the fuel door, passenger mirror and a very clean coolant overflow tank.

PM me if you want them cheap. While I don't have the local code inspector hounding me like John does, I get plenty of HOA lookieloos when the garage is open. People think I'm running a grease monkey operation in here...

Glad to hear that you're keeping it on the road. Didn't seem bad at all.

Going to send a PM about the WVO system.

Got a little further today, Finished stripping the car to get it ready for the shop.

The only chrome I left is around the windows. Easy to tape. I did remove the strips along the bottom of all the windows though, since they are fairly easy.

I removed the battery and took a good look at what was underneath...

Other than a little surface rust everything was solid

Even the battery tray was in good shape. Could use some por15 before I put it back in...

I removed the plastic guards under each fender to check out the areas.. CLEAN! Here's the drivers side... Pass side didn't even look dirty in there...

Still, other than that tiny bit of surface rust under the bat tray I have not found any rust. actually pretty amazing to me. Work has been done to the car in the past. The pass front clip has been replaced from a car that was originally gold, but it looks like the repair was done correctly, re-tacking and welding where it should be etc. If I had not removed the bumpers and seen the gold paint I would not have known.

Could someone tell me the actual part number for this hose? I can not locate it...

Going to go and get the arrangements made to have the car taken into the shop so they can start on it. I'll continue with some pictures as they work on it.

Got the seats yesterday, installed them today. I removed the bases from the original seats and put them on these new ones. Interesting differences, there is no arm rest, not missing, never was one. MAkes it perfect to get one of those nice wood boxes that sits in the tray.

Also, there are no nets behind the seats, on the drivers seat is a strap to adjust the lumbar. Seats are in great shape and match my good back seats perfectly.

So I now have a good sedan black back seat available, (perfect condition both top and bottom) Plus a black passenger front, with perfect covers, and a good bottom.

On to the next part...

In digging I found a new length of return fuel line, another 5 bucks in change totals about 11 bucks now, a bag with new window switch molding in black. and a bunch of other little stuff, like a survival kit etc. Always fun to clean out these cars.

I'm going to work on the transmission next and replace that b2 to see if it solves the forward drive issue and it's time to make that trip over to vstechs and see what I can help with there.

Fuel door

Hey, those other guys' fuel doors are junk. You need the one I'll never use

Actually, it sounds like you're in pretty good hands in the parts department.

Let us know how the roof rail removal went. I've avoided messing with mine due to fear of the headliner not looking right when I'm done.

Happy Holidays!

That's going to be the fun part.. The headliner was already removed from the car when I got it, so it's going to take me a bit to figure out how to put it all back together. Always better when I can take it apart myself first. I need to get glue, anyone have and idea of what to use and where to get some?

I tacked my carpet, and the loose parts of my headliner up with DAP Weldwood original contact cement. It's held up for years in my car.

HAd nice weather today, almost 60... so had a chance to go out and work on the car some more today. Finished prepping it for the paint, all the aluminum is now completely stripped off, wipers etc... I'm hoping to pull it to the shop this coming week and pass it off to them.

Since it's off the ground I think I'm going to go ahead and swap in the actuators I got from vstech tomorrow. I replaced the 2 front fuel filters, there was a good amount of what looked like rust flakes in the inline filter... but when I opened it up and rubbed some of the flakes on my fingers they dissolved... I'm guessing that this is an algae issue... knowing that the car was driven for years on WVO not too much of a surprise.

and have a new screen for the tank sitting here and will have that in tomorrow IF I don't see a bunch of crap in the tank... if so, I have to drop it and go power wash it... either way the lines need to be cleaned out while I'm at it.

So something interesting... While at VStechs I needed a new Passenger mirror but I told him I couldn't remember if mine was power of not... He said he had never seen one with a non powered pass mirror. Well, Mine non powered. It's just like the drivers side only in reverse. There is no control for it in the center dash either. Maybe being this was a non sunroof car it also didn't have power mirror options?
