Blower motor repair / evaporator cleaning 84 300D W123

Took out the blower motor in my 84 300D as it was acting up like the brushes were going bad. (Symptoms: won't start unless you give it full blast power far left button, then it will work OK at all speeds once rotating.) Took it to an alternator shop to have them put new brushes in it. Technically, it is not set up for user repair but I believe new brushes is do-able. Will let y'all know as soon as I get the word from the alternator repair guys.

Note on the removal of this item, though...in my car, one of the a/c hoses crosses underneath the motor from the firewall to the expansion valve. The only way to get the motor out is by removing that hose. Good thing my a/c is freon-free at the moment LOL. Nobody ever told me of that little issue. If you are working on your a/c in one of these cars, consider new brushes in your motor while you have your freon out. Once I got the motor out, it was apparent that the brushes were about gone. So it appears that the diagnosis was correct.

While I had a bit of access to the evaporator, I decided to see how cruddy it was. Verdict: it was cruddy. I went to my local Toyota dealer and got their evaporator cleaner kit for $20, and sprayed the evaporator out with it. I used a soft toothbrush very lightly on it between sprays, up and down with the grain, those vanes are delicate. That kit will fill up the evap box with foam about four times. The foam then condenses and drips out of the condensation tube, really dirty. At first the toothbrush was black with crud but by the third foaming, it was pretty clean.

I have posted a before and after video on youtube, each about 20 to 30 seconds. Since you can't see the evaporator directly, it's kind of like an automotive colonoscopy. Comparing the two videos, it looks like I took 20 years of crud off by using the cleaner. Not like brand new, but 75% or more of the way there. Close enough I hope. Now if the guys at the alternator shop have good luck with my blower motor, I'll be set.

Here are the videos:

Before
84 300D evaporator before cleaning - YouTube
Not a very good video but in the beginning and end of the clip you can see the crud.

After
84 300D evaporator after cleaning - YouTube
A better video seeing how clean one can of the Toyota evap cleaner got it.

There is also a video of my standup comedy in my channel if you need a laff.

I've pulled blower motors from all versions of the 123, and have yet to need to disconnect the evaporator hose...
can you post a pic of your setup? thanks.

It's an a/c hose from the firewall to the expansion valve. Maybe I could pull it through the firewall some to get some slack, don't know. Since it has no freon in it now it was easier to unhook. I'll post a photo when I put it back together.

I don't think so. I think it has factory a/c. It is a Canadian model, though. I forgot to take a photo before I put the kick panel back up

I also pulled out my Blower Motor about 2 weeks ago with out and disconnection of Hose and there thankfully was no hoses in the way.

Mine is a 1984,300D Federal; see pic. Notice where the AC Hoses/Tubings are to the left of the Blower Motor.

Where are you located? There are no local electrical rebuilding shops around here, not that I know of anyway, and for sure no one who will touch a blower motor.

Tks

Wow, that is a different configuration from mine. My expansion valve is roughly in the same place but maybe a little closer to the blower . The two hoses that attach to it come from the firewall to the right of the blower and cross almost around the housing, but are cut a little too short for that, so one of them (the small one) runs underneath the blower motor housing on the right side.

Not until I have to take that blasted panel off again, sorry. This car started as a hobby but sometimes it turns into real work. LOL.

I live near DC but there should be a shop near you. Look up alternator rebuilding or starter rebuilding.

I have the same 84 300DTurbo and am looking for help via photos to help me
access the Evaporator(for no-rinse cleaning) and the Blower Motor (for brush replacement).

Would you by chance have a few more photos to share (post)? Anyone out there?

Thanks.

Around here, Eastern West Virginia, it seems that field mice or some similar rodent are always building nests in fan blowers. My 1983 300D has developed a fluttering sound that seems to be coming from behind the dash area. It may not be a nest, but since this happens so often, I'd like to get to the blower fan and check it out and clean it out if needed.

One of the earlier posters mentioned the kick panel. Is this where the blower is located?....behind the kick panel on the passenger side under the dash?

I'm hoping that it's pretty straight forward in terms of removing, opening and cleaning the thing. But if anyone has any instructions, video, photos, etc., I sure would appreciate any info.

Thanks!

That is where Mine is located; see the pic posted ealier in the Thread. I have an 84 Federal 300D. Also the Plastic Blower Housing had Seimens and I believe the Motor is made by the sameo Company.

On the Bosch Motors in other Threads the Brushes are in the Rear of the Motor. On the Seimens one the Brushes are up front and you need to pull off the Squirle Cage Fan to get at them.

jimmypete posted this thread 3 years ago, don`t think he is around for pictures.
But I bet someone replaced the AC hoses on his car with something longer and after market. I have not come across a W123 with the AC Hoses running under the Blower.

Diesel911 shows a good picture of the Blower and the location of the Expansion valve and hose.

To remove the Blower, you need to remove the cover above the Passenger`s legs or below the Glove Box. Carefully remove the 3 plastic covers, and under them are 3 screws, then the panel will drop down. There are one each grey plastic screw on each side. Give it a 1/2 turn, then pull them out. Then wiggle the panel out.

Unplug the electric plug, one Phillips screw and then with a 8mm socket, remove the 3 screws and the Blower will drop down and out.
