Which axle?

Hey all,

I've got a axle that needs to be replaced. There are two types that were used in '81: one with a homokinetic joint and one with an annular joint - don't really know what those terms mean - something about an input shaft.

Here is the peach parts page with the shafts:

PeachParts FastLane Mercedes Parts Store

My wagon's build number calls for the earlier shaft, but I read that the newer style could be installed with some extra parts. I don't know if the previous owner may have updated the axles.

My question is: how can I tell which style I have?

Thanks,

it makes no difference.
the annular ones are originally installed. homo kinetic have a bolt in hubs for the differential...
you choose.

Annular is preferred for future maintenance.

aack. sorry. I get them mixed up all the time.
the nice thing about the annular ones is you never HAVE to pull the diff cover off again to change axles in the future.

Am I thinking right that I would need a flange and some bolts if updating?

Axle Assembly
Notes: New - Annular Joint - Federal Annular refers to an inner C.V. joint that is without an input shaft. Earlier versions require (1) 124 350 31 45 flange,(2) 124 357 01 75 and (6) 000 990 92 12 bolts if up-dating to new style.
Chassis Range: From 013756

If I go with a newer style axle, would I need to get these flanges?

OES GENUINE Wheel Hub Flange Kit - Rear,W0133-1597981 - PeachParts Genuine&weight=5.87

I can get good used newer style axles, but I don't want to spend BIG money for flanges.

I'm still not clear how to identify what I have. My VIN number shows that I would need the older style, but I don't know if they have ever been updated. I can't tell anything from neither the pictures nor the descriptions on new ones for sale.

Thanks

Those hubs are not for the axles.

If you already have homokinetic axles, then just stay with them.

If the shaft has a bolted joint close to the differential, it's the newer annular axle. If the shaft has two cans............one on each end...........it's the original homokinetic axle.

Thanks Brian - the description of the axles makes sense.
