1983 240d crank shaft seals

I just pulled the crankshaft out of a 1983 240d. I want to replace the front and rear seals.

The front seal looks like a round seal that slips on the shaft. The rear seal looks like 2 half seals. The half seal looks like it's pressed into the block and the upper pan. Is the rear seal 2 half rounded seals? I would think it would be similar to the front seal.

Are these the only seals on the crankshaft? I want to replace all the seals since I have the crankshaft out.

Thanks for any help.

pete

the rear should be a long section of rope that's set in place with a large chunk of pipe, then cut to length with a razor blade 1mm proud.

Compare the front end of the crankshaft to the rear end and see if you don't change your thinking.

Using the rope seal on the rear is sort of an old fashoned way of doing the rear seal but that is how MB does it and if installed correctly they last a very very long time.

Yep real old fashioned to use a rope seal. Have not seen any leak though, on Mercedes that is. I'm just starting to get into building a new engine for my 240.

Do I only need to buy 1 rear crankshaft seal?

Once I cut it 1mm above the block will there be enough to go into the upper pan?

Thanks.

Pete

Yes, you only need 1 seal.
