96 e300d glow plug problem
 

Hi Guys
No. 4 glow plug turns and turns wont come out. I think
carbon has built up on the shaft. Is there something I can do
to get this plug out without drilling? Is there a puller like a wheel
puller to clamp on it and pull it out? Thanks Greg

never seen a puller, but there is extensive post on glow plug removal. I had this happen to me and this site was very helpful. If you look under the how to articles you will find your answer.

OTC Glow Plug Puller will help you get your plug out. You can buy it online. Its about $35. I used it to remove the plugs on my 606. They were spinning as you describe. Useful tool, no gimmick, however, not very well made. I considered it a one shot deal.

Are you saying that the threads are out and just the shaft is spinning? That should be an easy one for a home made puller, as the top of the center electrode is threaded. My no. 6 snapped just above the threads, the two halves held together by the center electrode. The hex portion was just spinning, but the threads still in the head did not move. Hope that is not your case. Mine required a laborious drill out, after oil filter housing removal. On the plus side, I did get more intimate knowledge of the 606.

If it is truly carbon bound, generous amounts of PB Blaster and a product called Freeze Off should free it up. When I did my glow plugs, I had three that were carbon bound, and I would spray a combination of PB Blaster and Freeze Off, and turn the plug back and forth as far as I could until it finally broke free. I made sure to use a carbon reamer prior to installing the new plugs. Good luck

had the same problem with my 606. wound up making a tool that easily removes the prechamber [the gp's tip needs to be backed out enough to clear the pc]. i then machined an insert with orings that goes in the pc hole that lets you hydraulically pump[used my poptester] out the gp] works like a charm and doesn't require the removal of the oil filter housing. whunter now has the tool. pictures and an explanation of the deal are posted somewhere in the shop forum.
