Slow transmission leak. Can it be the pan gasket?
Ive had a slow transmission fluid leak over the last year or more on my 85 300TD W123. Needing to top it up every couple of months or so, depending on factors im not clear about yet. But its loss rate seems to vary. (either that or my memory of the last time I filled it varies)
For the last 5-6 months my car has been in the shop jacked up a little by the rear and its formed a steady puddle over all this time without movement or even starting the engine. I see around the bottom edges of the trans. oil pan there are drips that slowly form over the day or however long (right now they look as if theyre all dangling there waiting to drip) and the bottom of the oil pan is very oily. Im wondering, by the fact that it hasnt moved or run for so long but continues to drip, would that point to a bad gasket? is this as relatively easy to replace as the oil pan gasket if so? Or would the fluid level possibly be high enough to factor in other possible origins of the leak? Thanks again for any input in advance. Michael |

check the round piston covers on both sides of the tranny for leaks. You'll have to wipe it down and and wait for fluid to appear again

My exact thoughts. I would wipe it clean and then inspect carefully where it is coming from.
I once had a leak at the vacuum modulator. Fluid was foaming out past the O-ring. I replaced the O-ring and all was fine after that. While you are under there, check to see how the rubber sleeves are that hold the transmission fluid cooler lines up. If they are hard or missing, replace them. If they are missing, the bracket will eventually wear a hole in the line from vibration and will cause the steel line to leak. It does not sound like this is your problem right now.

Yes, quite possible a failed or improperly torqued gasket.

Another possibility....
Could be the o-ring where the trans. dip-stick tube attaches to the transmission housing. I had that once.....resulted in consistent slow leak, with small puddle every morning. The dip stick tube has an o-ring on the end of the tube....once inserted back into the trans. housing, there is a plate with one bolt that holds the thing in there (in addition to the upper dipstick tube mount which must be detached and re-attached). Very tight quarters with other things in the way make this one of those "very simple but real PIA" type repairs.
