Castlated Transmission Sockets
Im in the middle of a Xmission swap and need to swap the aft ends of the transmissions from an electric drive speedo to manual drive.
To remove the aft drive flange requires 2 different sockets for each transmission. One appears to be a 30mm deepwell and the other one is some MB castlated deepwell, does anyone know the part number or tool number and who sells them. I searched all the tool threads and did not see it.

Fast Lane has their special tools section.
Mercedes Special Tools Section 26 & 27 are for the manual and automatic transmissions. At the top of the left column is the price page for the part. Charlie

Some of the 722.1s and 722.3s have a two pronged slotted nut a bit like on the W123 / W126 rear wheel bearings. As far as I know the replacement nuts now come in the 30mm 12 point type. Much easier to deal with...

FYI, there is no reason to go purchase a special socket for the odd nut... just chisel and hammer it out. you are going to replace it anyway, so just bang on the thing until it's loose.

Thanks for the info. I want the socket for future ease of removal. This is the third transmission job and won't be the last I'm afraid with 5 cars. I need to know which of the 3 sockets will fit the driveshaft flange. I will measure the nut and call them today. I have tried to beat one of those nut out of that recess before and had no luck. I finally took it to a local shop to have the nut removed for $20.

If you have a piece of pipe the right diameter you can cut it with an angle grinder to make a type of socket. Then just heat & quench it to make it hard as, weld a handle on it & you have your own.
The rear wheel bearing ones on a w123 are a total PITA. I gave up. Put a grease nipple into the hub & shut one up that way !! ~ true shade tree stuff !!

My trans had that nut on it as well, borrowed the tool from the dealer when I had to do it. Currently have a 1985 300D transmission in my 1982 300SD....over 30k on it so far, shifts great!

I never surrendered !!!
Retreated for a day while planning my next move & then fixed it another way. It did a few 100k miles after that without a problem. The grease nipple worked a treat !!! Lubrication is the key to quietening down bad bearings. Act quick though !!

I got the nut removed fairly quick with a chisel, funny thing then I had trouble un-peening the 12 point 30mm nut and had a terrible time getting it off.
If the rear wheel bearing castelleted nut and the axle drive nut were the same size it would be worth $80 to have the the socket on hand. One thing is for sure, a 300SD is soooooo much easier to change a transmission in than a 300D. There is at least 6 more inches of space at the firewall. 10 hours off and on including servicing fluid, test drive and clean up. The 300D took longer last time because one of the 10mm allen head bolt rounded out and I had to cut it. What a PAIN. Thanks for the help.
