A little help needed.

Hello all! Hope everyone had a nice holiday!

I was wondering if I could get a few questions answered, but first I would like to explain a little about my situation. I have a 1983 300SD – “126” and I’ve had is for almost 4 years. Recently it started making a noise while the engine was running. I took it to the auto hobby shop near where I live to check it out. Initially I thought it was the exhaust, but it turns out that the transmission was bad. While I was looking at the transmission there appeared to be at least 3 bolts that were sheared off the torque convertor, and or flywheel.

So here are my questions.

1. Has anyone had any similar experiences with bolts being sheared off?

2. Has anyone purchased a transmission near 10533 in the Westchester County area? If so, could anyone give any recommendations as to a good place to buy one?

As an added note I plan to do most of the work myself and have access to a garage with lifts and all the tools needed to perform the repairs. I’d like to pull the transmissions vice unhooking the engine.

Thanks for any information and help.

He's just recently done about everything possible to one of those transmissions.

Query (?) the shafts of the Bolts are still remaining in the Flywheel?
[as opposed to the entire bolt being missing.]

pull trany today

Today I pulled out the trany and I took some pics. The part on the front of the converter is torn and broken. The engine side fly wheel has some damage but the other side is also torn. I don't know what these are called (you can see it in the attached pics) or if they have a part number, could I have some help please.

The car is an 83 300sd I got it with 106k, now it’s at 195k and most are highway miles. I will be putting in a rebuilt unit as I have read that the trany lasts about 200k. I also turned the engine over by hand; it appears to have no damage. What could have caused this?

Thanks!

Not sure why the dates are off on those pictures but I just took them today. I have another one that I couldn't upload due to the limit.

Thanks again guys.

The pictures are pretty blurring. I can't see exactly what has gone wrong.

Here are some clearer pictures of a craked trans Flex Plate.
Does this look like what your is like?

yeah... it looks like the flexplate between the flywheel, and the crank came apart. it's just a thin triangle of metal that holds the TC on... the good news is your tranny may not be bad! does the TC rotate smoothly?
what were the symptoms of the transmission failing? did the rear wheels lock up? the flexplate is likely pretty cheap, I'd order a new one, and a new set of bolts (brace yourself on the price of the bolts... nearly 9.00 each bolt! 12 needed...
you might want to take the transmission to a shop and have it inspected. see if coolant got into it, and locked up the clutches or something... have it gone through and resealed if not, get a new B2 piston kit with o-rings and everything... and drive another 150K or more with 30K fluid and filter changes

oh, and if it turns out you need a trans... I've got a decent low mileage one from an 83SD sitting on my shop floor...
