little ball bearings in oil pump

I have a 1983 240d. I have the engine on a stand and the upper pan off.
I pulled the crankshaft and pistons. When I look into the bottom of the oil pump, I can see about 10 little ball bearings on the screen of the oil pump.

I can take a picture of it tomorrow and attach it to this post.

Any idea where there ball bearings came from?

Thanks.

Pete

x2 vacuum pump.
very common failure.
and if it's anything like the 60x vacuum pumps, you are missing two bearings... check the timing chain very well...

So there are 2 bearings in the vacuum pump?

I wonder if this was the cause of the bent valve on my #3 cylinder.

Is this something that should be replaced on all benz diesels?

I will look at the timing chain tomorrow. Do you think I will find some jammed in between the links?

Thanks.

Pete

Two Conrad assemblies; 6 ball bearings per unit/12 total.

You were right. I found 12 ball bearings. Once of the ball bearing was smaller than the others.

There were a few pieces of metal also.
It looks like a rubber piece from part of the bearings seal. Also looks like a thick small washer or part of the bearing. I will pull the vacuum pump shortly and see what's missing.

I'd like to pull the oil pump. I removed the bolts that held it in place. Does it just pull out?

I don't know how much force I should use in pulling on it or if there's a trick to removing it. It spins around which allowed me to remove the crankshaft.

I think you can rebuild the vacuum pump from a 617 or a 616, not sure whitch one you have. I guess your timing chain is ok?

The timing chain looks fine. Do I need to break the chain in order to put it back on the camshaft or can it be slipped over the gears without taking a link out?

Thanks.

Please do a search on replacing your timing chain, if you do it wrong you will lose your timing.

I hope you used that tool to set the injector pump timing before you took the motor apart?? Motor 12deg. after TDC?

I put zip ties around a few sections of the chain through the cam gear holes, then take out the center bolt on the gear, and slip the gear off the cam... then lower the gear into the abyss of the head...
