How to start a 58 300D

Iam sure not many on the Forum have this model/year 300D. but thought this was interesting on how to start it.

This is how you start a 1958 Mercedes 300D - YouTube

Thery made those cars that way from, I believe, 1956 onwards.

My 1960 Adenauer was like that.

I've always had a soft spot for an Adenauer. I'll probably never own one though.

Fun video Charlie!

Thanks!

They are worse money pits than an historic house, especially since the main purveyors of parts screw you to the wall.

in high school, my government teacher wanted to give me one of those cars... not quite in that shape of course... and his was a 57... I worked on his cars, and talked shop enough with him, he felt I'd be a good person to take on the car. I passed on it... I was busy working on the race car, and my toyota celica at the time... (boot planted firmly on my butt now...)

Way cool. I believe this is a case where the "D" doesn't mean diesel either. It's technically a 300d. Check out the wiki page for the Type 300 - Mercedes-Benz Type 300 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

My dad had a fleet of those. More like a '60 runner, a '59 barn find and 2 '58 parts cars. The gear indicator of the runner was on the dash to the left of the speedo rather than on the steering column. Among the first gasoline cars to have fuel injection and the last to have a chassis lube pedal for the driver. I don't recall having to turn on the fuel pump to start it.

The M189 ain't no Diesel. The W189 is a 300d in literature after the W186 300/300b/300c, simply 300 on the trunk lid.

It says on the wiki page that a w189 300d cost $27,000 DM (which is about $17,600 in US Dollars), and the Cabriolet cost $35,000 DM (which is about $23,000). Using a inflation calculator these costs are $138,000 and $180,000 in 2011 dollars.

The price of brakes parts and distributer caps come to mind....

I have a '61 190SL and a ponton W128 sedan, when I had the chance to buy a nice running 1959 300d for $7000 a few years ago, I passed for the same reasons. It's hard enough to deal with the people who supply parts for the regular oldtimers, but the 300 is on a different level. Somewhat akin to Rolls parts. My number one dream car always has been a long wheelbase W112 body 300SE with a Becker Mexico.

I forgot about the chassis lube system, sure beat spending an eternity properly greasing the bazillion grease nipples on the "lesser" models.

They also had rear tosion bars that were adjustable from the dash in order to compensate for heave loads. Seems I remember they were operated by electric motors.

There was also a plethora of special order options, ranging from a crude telephone, to trailer hitches, a sliding metal or Webasto cloth sunroof, several am/fm/sw radios, flag mounts, an electric motor powered divider window, luggage fitted to the car(including hat boxes), radiator blinds(my W128 has this option), supplemental heaters that blew warm air from under the rear seat, town and country horns.... and that's just off the top of my head.

The real problem with these cars is parts, parts, and parts.

While I'm drooling over the car, I wonder how much it would cost to restomod a car like that and replace the brakes and some of the other outdated and expensive to replace/repair parts on the car, while keeping it to look original
