Possible Good Deal?

A "rebuilt" engine? Could be a good deal.

Maybe, you'd have to inquire about just what the rebuild involved. The ALDA has been tampered with, new timing chain?

$2800 is a meaningless figure for a 'rebuild' on a OM617.

If you factor in the labour to remove the motor and reinstall (usually the lack of ability to pay the bill comes up when the car is back together and ready to be picked up), actual hard labour on the work, and the cost of parts, it was a very partial job. Probably a re-ring and perhaps just a head rebuild.

If you need a motor, find a used one you can listen to before buying. I would not touch one like this with a bargepole.

I would want to know what type of shop did the work and I would want to be emailed an invoice of exactly what was done including the cost of each item of work. I'd also want to know the mileage on the engine.

If they could provide that much I'd take it.
