Removing 240D Steering Lock Assembly

I'm working on what is suppose to be a common electrical problem and replacing the electrical portion of the ignition switch. I've successfully removed the wiring harness connector from the back of the switch.

Has anybody removed / replaced this unit with it in the car or is it easier to remove the steering lock assembly from the car ?

Thanks
Greg

I think it depends on the Year of your Car.

Sometime in the 80s they increased the length of the Skirt/shield that goes around the Switch. This means the Switch is deeply recessed inside making it harder to remove the Switch.

So, some Members have said it is easier to remove the whole Steering Colum Lock to change the Ignition Switch.

Yes, you can replace with lock installed in the car, just a little awkward but not too difficult. It is secured with three M4 slotted cheese head screws. Take them out with a screwdriver and throw them away, you're wasting your time trying to get them back in. Replace them with three M4 x 10mm Allen cap screws. A 3mm Allen key (? I think) makes replacing a piece of cake.

I have replaced the steering lock assembly 3 times. I don`t see how it is possible to get behind the Ignition switch with it still installed in the car. It may be possible though with the right combination of words and small hands. the 3 screws face to the rear of the switch, and it is sort of a cup that covers the pins, and the screws are recessed inside the cup.

Now if your 240D is an 80 or earlier, there is no cup, and the pins are exposed as well as the screws.

The switch I was referring to was the later type with the screws recessed 20mm. I used a stubby screwdriver that I modified by shortening a little. I have just checked the dimensions of it and the shaft is 6mmŲ X 25mm long - overall with handle 55mm. Replacing the Allen screws with an Allen key T wrench is a lot easier than removing them with a screwdriver.

In any case there is nothing to be lost by trying and a lot of time and hassle to be saved by succeeding.
