Starter Recommendation 300SD

Pulled dead old starter out of my 83 300SD.

Been looking on ebay. Saw ACDELCO 336-1474 Starter and was wondering if anyone used a reman starter from AC Delco before and if it was any good.

eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices

Steering clear of duralast, but any other recommendations welcome...

in my humble opinion, you are better off pulling one from a junkyard and using it. what is wrong with yours? there is a great diy on rebuilding them yourself in the WIKKI

I do want to rebuild my starter as time permits, but for now, i want something to get me back on the road.

In the mean time, I figure I can get a good reman one for $100 to $150 or so to get me back on the road off ebay including core charge.

Started having problems a few months ago with slow turnover and big time draw on the battery. (Originally thought it was the alternator and replaced it with AL129X since I wanted to do that upgrade anyway).

Then the problem with starter came more frequent and random. I ruled out the ground strap and battery and alternator.

Can't even jump it now.

Starter won't turn on at all, now I don't even have the solenoid click either.

So I got it out today, and connected it straight to he battery with jumper cables. I also used a jumper box as well. The gear doesn't move out and it won't turn unless I beat on it with a hammer. And it's pretty anemic when it does turn.

Good web site, I'll keep that in my hip pocket.

Many times, underwhelmed by them.
Never had one last more than 14 months on a diesel.

Perhaps it is just my area, but the McParts remans here average 3-6 months with a few surviving 1.5 years.

Don't get an Autolite rebuild. I went through about 5 in less than a month and finally got the manager to refund my money after all of the suffering it took to replace the starter that many times. I finally just threw in a junkyard starter and as far as I know it is still working great for the new owner years later.

Iskra starter

I have 2 Iskra starters I bought off e-bay quite a few years ago. Got one from a shop in NC and another from an independent shop in WI. both were brand new.

First one (don`t remember how long it was on) but started to grind when starting eng. pulled it off, and the shaft had worn a hole through the end of the motor,

Now using the other one on the 85. see how long it lasts.
they are made in slavokia. Roy, heard of these? did a search on Google and not much comes up but came across this co. info:

Iskra Avtoelektrika d.d. - Iskra Avtoelektrika, starter motors, starters

YEARS AGO, when they wanted to make an entry into the Western World, they made super good products. Now, not so much.

The old stuff will outlast the cockroaches and a nuclear blast. Hard to find, though.
