83 300D air filter tube difficulties, mystery part

Recently i changed all my glow plugs and adjusted my valves. While i was into it i decided to take off the air filter housing to see if the bracket was broken. Sure enough it was, so i will fix that in the future if i dont just give up.

Im seriously considering replacing the stock air filter setup with one of the aftermarket cone filters after battling getting this thing back together and sealed right.

The gasket on the air filter side of the 90 degree pipe was deformed, brittle, and never was seated right so ive been sucking dirty air for who knows how long.

I ordered new gaskets and i still cant get the thing on for the life of me. Ive tried what diesel giant suggested by not putting the gasket in all the way.

Also, i cant get the old gasket out from the turbo side of the pipe. I seriously think it is made of metal. Were those seals ever made of metal? The replacement i ordered is rubber.

I ordered from ******** and they sent me a mystery part. The site says: Genuine Mercedes OEM
Turbocharger Seal; Grommet, Air Intake Pipe to Air Filter Housing. I cannot figure out what this thing is or where it goes. See pic below for mystery part

Thanks for any tips of suggestions. I really dont want to get rid of the stock air filter and would like to do this the right way. Just about to start bashing my head into the wall

It looks like the Rubber Grommet that goes into the Lid of the Air Filter housing and seals the Nipple that sticks out of the Breather (under where the Blow-by Breather Hose attaches).

But, you year may not have the same type connection for the Blow-by Hose.
It could be where the Red Arrow points in the pic.

Or were you looking for the U-tube Seals #46 or #47?

(it's rubber, but heat and oil harden it, just pry it out, it'll likely shatter. be careful not to break your U-tube!)

See pic below for mystery part it could be the seal for your oil seperator... in the filter lid. this is the biggest reason to ALWAYS order parts from phil on this site. He always gets the right parts, and has great prices

Not that much. You would have been able to see an opening with the naked eye, for it to be making that much difference. Unless you drive in a very dusty environment, I wouldn't worry about it.

If it's metal, it was a creative adaptation. I doubt it. The seal -- and probably your intake C-hose as well -- is no doubt very hard with time from so many heat-cool cycles. Do you have a Dremel tool? You could very, very gently use a cutting wheel to cut partway through it. If you weaken it that way it should be easier to pry it out.

Getting the new ones in is like pushing a pig into a mailbox, agreed. I soaked the C-hose in very hot water, then used petroleum jelly and infinite amounts of patience to insert the ring. It was many years ago but as I recall I had to take more than one run at it (what I expected to be a 15-minute quick job turned into a project).

DO NOT install a cone filter. If you feel you cannot do it, order a new C-hose instead. Most likely less than a brand name cone setup.

Well i finally got everything back together. I didnt feel like ordering and waiting on a new C pipe to come in the mail.

I eventually got this sucker sealed GOOD. How i did it was cut the little "Lip" off of each end of the C pipe so that i could put the gaskets on the turbo and the air breather housing, then slide the C pipe onto them. It was a bear, and still wouldnt go on without misalligning that gasket on the airbox. The turbo side was simple but the airbox side had me cursing again. Finally i got out the propane torch, heated the C pipe with the lip now chopped off to almost melting point, greased it, slid it on, tightened the clamps and its on there. I can almost kill the engine by holding my hand over the intake to the air filter housing now. It wont die if you rev it, just smokes like crazy.

Thank you guys for the help. Next time ill remember to order a new C pipe before i tear into it and prepare for war

what grease should i use when installing new "utube" seals #46 and #47?

I used petroleum jelly. You could use a bit of clean motor oil as well.

I don't think there is a specific guideline for it.

STP or a Generic type STP. They also make O-ring lube.

When I did mine (I reused the old ones) I noticed there was a lot of sharp edges on the Air Filter Housing. I got a fine File and smoothed off the edges.
I used Silicon Sealant and glued the U-tube Seals in place after it cured; andc used STP on the Nipple of the Air Filter Housing.

It still took some force. I think the U-tube must shrink a little over the years.

Is that a Dealer item; if so please post the part number.

Chicken Fat is not sold at the local Auto Parts Store.

Chickens can be hard to catch; is there something else I can use?

I need the Chicken Fat to use as Fuel.

I went to the local KFC and they would not give me any Chicken Fat because they say they never change it. They just keep re-frying the Chicken in the old Fat.
