Diesel Surge......Yup, I spelled that right

I have an 82 300cd that has started "surging" @ highway
speeds. Cruise is off and has not worked in yrs. It just seems
to excelerate on its own.......maybe 5mph, as if I put my
foot into it.

This is a new one on me......any ideas?

hmmmm not a lot of info to go on.

My first guesses would be

Failing Turbo, giving the engine a little burst when it does spin?
Bad air filter, starving the engine.
Failing lift pump, maybe not getting enough fuel pressure all the time then bursts of it?

Maybe the Cruise is activating /shorted or? Try to pull the connection rod between the cruise and the throttle on the engine...

All totally guesses

Post Surging

Is almost _always_ caused by fuel flow issues , fast fix is to add one quart of Power Service " Diesel 911 " to a full tank of fuel , then plan to drain the tank and remove & clean the in tank fuel screen as soon as the weather warms up a bit .

DO NOT let any DIY'er or bubba goof ball talk you into reversing the fuel feed & return lines in the engne compartment " to test " as this will ony force whatever crud is causing a minor problem , to be injested to the IP causing you much heartache and $ wasted down the road .

I asume you've already checked the clear plastic fuel intake screen in the engine compartment and it's clear , not fll of chunks or clogged ? if it is , remove it and blow out backwards , if this fixes things for now , you need to service the entire fuel system and do a " Diesel Purge " ASAP .

With one reservation.
*** A Bad tank of fuel almost plugging then clearing one or more of the filters.

I have personally gone through this four times since July 2011.

This usually just reduces power evenly across all RPM & loads... BT , DT .

I too experienced dirty filters recently... and yes it "surged", but I did feel it "losing" power first... kinda like a failing points distributor. New filters did fix it.

If not the filters could the ALDA fail in such a way that it "kicks" in intermittently?

I almost added that myself But then I was like, what are the chances... Filters would be a great place to start.

I am not experencing any movement if the pedal,
so I believe I can safely rule out anything in the cruise.

It is overdue for filters, So I will put that on this weekend
doit list. I also noticed fuel leaking this A.M. at the top
of the housing of the secondary filter (the big one) around the bolt.
Could this be sucking air?

Always fuel filters first on almost any apparent fuel supply probability on a diesel. If the old filters turned out to still have been good. Keep them as emergency spares in tight containers. You can run yourself ragged trying to find the issue on occassion otherwise. When all it was was a filter.

Post Routine Filter Change

One thing you can do is to fill the secondary filter full up with Diesel Purge before installing it then when you start it again , the purge will give a quick clean to the IP & injectors .

If you do this , you needn't prime the system , just start it and hold @ 2,000 RPM's until you hear & feel the air bleeding out and the engine misses a bit them smooths out again ~ this takes a little while so don't go letting it idle too soon or it'll die on you .
