OM603 VACUUM PARTS
1987 300sdl
The first thing I learned about the plastic parts in the vacuum system is that they snap off or apart if you look at them sideways. I managed to snap off one end of a little filter and think I should replace it, rather than just splice in a piece of hard plastic line. The filter I'm looking for is #62 in the attached diagram, which is the first thing the rubber vacuum line coming from the vacuum pump attaches to. One end goes in the rubber line to the pump and one end goes into the 5-way connector right below it in the diagram. Either this is a very clogged filter, or it has a restrictor element to it, because VERY little air flow passes through it. Does anyone know what this is and/or where I can get it? It seems that with this filter in place, very little vacuum was making it out the other end, telling me that very little vacuum has been getting to the things attached to the various ports of the 5-way connector. Should this be causing a problem with any of these devices? If I just bypass it, it seems that the full vacuum from the pump will be distributed through the 5-way. If I bypass it, I'll post what happens. thanks BRuce |

It's a strainer. Here's the last discussion on the part with part number and how to order:

Vacuum report
So I bypassed this little part, which apparently is a "strainer," and immediately the trans started shifting smoother and more appropriately. It looks like it just wanted some proper vacuum. Will report other progress, and thanks for the "strainer" link.

Did you try blowing brake parts cleaner through the filter from the vacuum pump side?

Vacuum parts part 2
Well, it didn't take much gentle manipulating of the 5-way rubber vacuum connector to pull off the piece that goes to the "strainer" that goes to the pump (see earlier diagram). Of course, no one has heard of it. Aside from at a dealer, has anyone seen this for sale?
BTW, I could try the brake cleaner on the strainer if I hadn't snapped one of the connector nipples off removing it. thanks Bruce S |

vacuum parts part 2 ps
My local Mercedes dealer SAYS they have the 5-way rubber for 13.50 and can get the strainer in one day for $12. Peach parts has the strainer for 7 or 8, BTW
