A couple 617 questions and a new toy.

Hey guys,
Long time lurker not so much of a poster. I have a couple of questions regarding my diesels. First a little story though to explain some background. Back in November I picked up an 83 300D on ebay for 300. I was told that it blew an oilcooler line but I figured some of the engine could be salvageable. It ran but had a pretty good tick. The car was pretty trashed and I was going to use the engine in my Toyota truck. Long and short was that engine had 2 bad cylinders and wrecked the liners and pistons. So I bought an engine from a member here that was supposed to be good. I used my the head off my old car (the other was a wagon head) and had it checked and it was fine. I also used my IP as the other one is missing the ALDA. So now I have the truck pretty well done and the engine will not start and I am getting a pretty healthy amount of blowby out of the oil cap just cranking it. I have an adapter for my compression tester coming this week. I took my injector lines off and the IP doesn't shoot much fuel out. I can get fuel up to a few of the injectors but 1&2 do not get fuel up to them. Lines are clear. I have triple checked the timing of the engine and IP. I did have the cam timing off at first but I corrected that. I have worked on diesels all my life but this is throwing me off. Ok now the next thing. I saw an add on Craigslist for an 82 300D for 750. I went to look at it with the intention of using it for the engine. Well long and short of that after driving the car home 80 miles.. I believe I am going to keep it and just fix the engine out of the truck. I love the 300 way too much to tear up. I am having trouble tracing vacuum shut off issues on it. I have tried capping different lines to no avail. I am lost. I realize this may be a shot in the dark because there are so many hoses I guess I am wondering if there are any common places to start. Sorry for the long post but I wanted to cover all the bases. Now how about a few pictures!

The first 300D.

Hanging the engine in.

Engine in the truck

Engine with adapter plate to Toyota transmission and re drilled Toyota flywheel and clutch.

And finally my new 300D. Its an 82 Turbo with 320k and counting. Seems to be in decent shape. Has a little body rust that I'll fix in due time.

Ignore the greasy hand print I had just finished trying to fix the vacuum shut off. Sorry for the long post guys. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Like your new car. If you used the IP off the engine that lost the oil cooler line, the IP might be shot. It relies upon engine oil for lubrication.

How many HP is your "engine hoist"?
you ought to clean up those euro lights! do the vacuum adjusts work?
lemme know if you need a rubber strip for your front bumper... I'm collecting them...
I'm pretty swamped at the moment, but I'll add your request to my growing list of "todo's"
be sure and update the pics of your new toy once you've got it cleaned up!
Nice China sedan too!

Kerry- I did use the injection pump off the old car. I hadn't made the oil loss connection. What is puzzling me is the fact that that engine ran and ran quite well when I took it out it just had that horrible tick. I tried to use either to start it tonight which I know is a really bad idea but I didn't use much and the glow plugs were not connected. (just wanted to see if it would hit) It didn't even hint at firing. I am really leaning toward stuck rings and not enough compression.

Junkman I am very blessed to have the shop that I do. It stays pretty busy as I have a small diesel shop that I run on the side when I am not farming or going to school. I mainly work on Pickups and VW's so the Mercs are fairly new to me.

Steamboatsykes- Thanks I wasn't a fan at first but its growing on me. It has the dark blue interior as well. I was expecting a junker when I read the ad and was surprised when I saw what it was.

The hoist is 70hp. It works quite well lol. I may and sell them I am not sure yet. I have a N/A 617 laying around that may go in it. My sister wants it. I'm holding on to the blue one though. I'm not sure I am going to keep it blue after the rust repair. The rust isn't bad but its going to bother me so its getting fixed. I am not sure to be honest as I drove it off the trailer and into the shop. I didn't want to wreck the engine any worse. Everything in that car worked though. Thank you for your help I really appreciate it!

PowerstrokeJoe,

Welcome to Mercedes land. They sure do have a way of growing on you ... I traded a ford pickup for a 76 300d (115 chassis) about a year ago and now I have two more, a 300TD (123) Wagon and a 74 240d (115). All great cars.

I followed with interest your thread on one of the Toyota forums on swapping in a 617 into a Toyota truck. I have a '93 Toyota 4wd truck with a 22re that I've owned for a long time. The 22re is a great engine, but I really like the idea of a 617 in that truck. Not sure if the IFS will create issues with the 617 oil pan.

I'm kind of idly keeping my eye out for a good turbo 617. Apparently I'm not very good at parting out whole vehicles (I want to save them; that's the story on the 240 .

One part of me hates to ruin a good thing with the truck the way it is, the other thinks that a turbo diesel stick-shift 4x4 toyota truck would be cool as hell.

Your adapter plate looks really good. You didn't happen to make a tracing of it did you?

New merc looks great; congratulations.

Zacharias- Thank you! lol that hoist is very handy.

54Dan- The guys over there on Yota tech have been very very good to me. I love the Benz and I will not be tearing it apart. The 617 will clear the IFS with the pan notched out. It isn't hard to do with a welder. Here is my pan before I grind it down. I love my Toyota truck and It has been good to me but after 220k the 3.slow was tuckered out. Had it not been worn out I probably would have left it. I actually have an exact copy of the adapter made from plywood. It is for the 3.0 bellhousing though. If it can ever be of any help to you holler at me on either forum and I will be glad to loan it to you.

I have decided just to pull the engine from the truck and go completely through it. If you would like I will post the whole rebuild process in this thread. If not then I wont lol. I appreciate everyone's help so much!

Thats interesting we have a very tiny little blue New Holland/Ford running around here. Is your Ford a 6.0 or a 7.3. I had an 03 6.0 I miss that truck. It was great! Thanks for the welcome!

Hey PowerstrokeJoe,

Way cool. We would definitely like to see and hear about the 617 rebuild here! Not knowing much about Toyota interchangeability, I guess the 3.0 must use a different bellhousing than the 22R. I'm pretty sure I have a W56 trans. I'm contemplating saving my time and spending $$ on this:

OM617 to Toyota 5 speed | 4×4 Labs

I go back and forth, but a bolt-together and drop-in after modifying the oil pan sounds good. If you have a chance, more pics of the oil pan would be great!

One other question: does your truck have a body lift? Seems like that may be necessary for the hood to shut.

Thanks again and welcome to the forum.

-Dan

I am planning to take the engine out Saturday afternoon. I am going to take tomorrow off. I am fairly sure they are different but I am not totally sure. The fact you have a w56 is good thing as the other 22re trans is known for blowing up behind the 617. I will get more pictures of the pan once I get the engine out. Luke at 4x4 labs is a great guy. As for the body lift. I believe a 2 inch will clear the hood I have a 4 inch lift and it has quite a bit of clearance. I'll post a bunch of pictures over on yotatech for you as I don't want to get in trouble overe here for being off topic. Or I will be glad to email pictures as well. If there is anything else let me know I'm glad to share what I know.

Welcome to the forum.

You won`t get in trouble, It`s MB Diesel related anyway. Here is a MB Diesel swap that "CELL" did a while back in his Chevy PU. and there has been others.

And this one that is running now. well, it is MB to MB
