Odometer gears

Are the gears the same part across the MB line for the same time period?? Mine are not working but the local pull a part has many MB from the same time period sitting in the yards.

... maybe.
but odds are great that the parts car will have identical gear condition... broken. the plastic MB used, just did not hold up to age well.
best to order new ones from odometergears.com

also, there is no way to remove the gears in a parts car..., you'd have to swap the entire cluster to achieve a working odo...

I concur. Best to get new ones, unless you want to replace them again in a few months or a year.

This is not true. There are plenty to choose from in the JY. If yours is the SDL then most later model W126 would have the same gears. Normally it is the small gear on motor shaft that is broken. The motor is driven by pulses from the rear diff, I believe, as they are all electronic speedo. Fleabay rips you off for $50+ for 3 plastic gears.

You can also try BMW as they uses the same gears. I think the smallest gear is 12 teeth, cannot remember. The cluster from gas car will work but not correctly as the pulses from the diff is wrong due to gear ratio. I have success from the JY.

link to a set of gear from Fleabay.

You are LUCKY, all of those sweet PicknPulls loaded with older MB.
I wish I could spend months out there grabbing hard to find parts.

That is why I wrote try BMW. It is the same gear and there may be more later 'crashed' models.

are you telling us that you have removed gears from clusters successfully? HOW did you do it? I've always had to cut the brass hub off the shaft on the 126 electronic speedo...

I removed the plastic part from the gear, not the brass part. It is doable if you pull it evenly. Remove the old one, less the brass part also, put a drop of super glue on and slip the new one back on.

That is how I fixed my SDL. I ain't going to pay $50+ for 3 plastic gears.

I've been meaning to fix mine lately. The odometer only moves up 1/4 mile now for every mile traveled.

My fuel mileage has been terrible this year!

Gears are not the same across the time period. The 123's utilize a mechanical odometer while the 126's run off electrical impulses, so the gears are very different. My guess is the 124's also utilize electrical impulses. But definitely call the guys at Odometer Gears, very knowledgeable and helpful with any questions you may have. I used them and was very pleased. Their new gears should last for the life of the car.
