'85 300SD head gasket replacement HELP

Hi, folks. New guy here.

This board was recommended to me by Nate, from another board.

I have an 1985 300SD that, I think, has a blown head gasket. I love this car and so does my wife and I think our dog does, too.

Now, normally, pulling a head is fairly straight-forward. In this case, I don't want to remove anything that is not necessary and, I WISH TO REMOVE PARTS IN PROPER SEQUENCE. Having said all of that, is there any guru here that can direct me to a site that would describe how to do this PROPERLY?

Someone said that if the head bolts were removed willy-nilly, that it may break the camshaft.

I just want to get our baby back on the road and I would also change the timing chain and associated parts.

Thank you for any help that you can proffer.

Joe

I think if you have a hoist you can pull the head with the turbo and intake as one unit...

Welcome!

First for a newby we usually ask your symptoms and try to be certain you really need to replace the head gasket. It is a lot of work.

there is of course no way that you could break the crankshaft by removing the head bolts in a particular order. There are two or three fasteners near the front area where the cam chain runs though that are hard to find and easily overlooked which can cause problems if left un removed.

There is a certain procedure for unbolting the cam shaft bearing caps.

Welcome aboard.

he said camshaft, and you said crankshaft... I doubt either could be broken by unbolting something in the wrong order, but damage can be done to the cam towers or valves if the crank is rotated after the head is off, and it's attempted to bolt back down... or even if the cam is not exactly in the right position when reassembling.
there are specific instructions in the FSM for removal of the cam, as well as reassembly... best to follow those instructions!
