2 Stroke Oil as Fuel Additive?

Think I've read where a couple of ounces of 2 stroke oil may be a good idea when running ultra low sulpher fuel.

I run my now 340,000 mile 86 300 SDL (603.) from San Diego to Tucson & Phoenix & back twice monthly which is pretty much 1,000 miles of 70 to 80 mph for hours at a time. Been doing it for several years trying different fuel additives without much performance change.

Today I tried 2 -3 ounces of 2 Stroke oil with a full tank. Shot out to Phx stopping a couple of times to "look & listen". The damn thing now runs like is a young buck! Motor is as quiet as I can remember (10+ years and 200,000 miles). Idles smooth as I'd ever imagine. Same good power through all rpms..well a little pokey in the low pre turbo spool as usual. Also "seems" like I have better mpg by eyeballing the gauge. I'll find out after a fill up in the morning.

Anyone else tried 2 Stroke Oil as an additive to lube the IP etc. Just a little worried that when it runs so smooth something may break if ya know what I mean...i.e. no free lunches

Thoughts / experiences /downsides please before I fill up again and add a few more ounces of 2 Stroke Oil for the Tucson leg in the morning.

Thanks

Post 2 stroke is good stuff

I'm on a few of the Dodge Cummins Diesel forums, and MANY forum members are using 2 stroke oil in their trucks that were built before ULSD became a reality. From everything ive read about it, its all positives and no negatives.

I use ashless 2-stroke and sometimes Diesel Kleen (if there's a sale) in my truck on occasion, and I've been thinking about running a little 2-stroke and/or DK in my om606 to see how it likes it. I did notice a little quieter running motor in my Powerstroke truck on both products with a noticable reduction in injector "cackle" (it's a term to describe the racket the earlier 7.3 injectors make), but I only saw a MPG increase with the DK with cetane boost, still not enough to offset the pruchase price. I usually ran those two things in my fuel at various times because the injectors on a 7.3 Powerstroke are very expensive, are somewhat difficult to get at to replace (under the valve cover), and there are eight of the buggers if you do have to bite the bullet.

As long as it's ashless I really don't see any negatives as far as your engine is concerned, and it's nice to know you're doing anything you can to help your older rig stay on the road when the .gov seems hell-bent on getting our old diesels off the road to make way for plastic hippie cars. I hate being behind new city buses and getting a whif of that urea injection, no more does diesel have that nice tangy aroma we all love, now it just smells like hot tub cholrine on steroids.

Open the .pdf in post #16 in the thread below.
#1 that produced the least amount of Wear Scar of the stuff tested was 2% Biodiesel mixed with Diesel.
2 Stroke Oil ranked 7th from the top.
(Also some 2 stroke Oils are Red and this could prove a problem in areas where they stop Diesels and dip the Fuel Tanks to see if they are using Off Road Diesel Fuel; that also has Red Dye in it.)

I do not remember which one of our Members furnished the below info:
"I have done extensive record keeping about what improves the mileage on my N14 Cummins, as I am a long-haul truck driver. During the $4.50 plus days, I was going crazy trying everything to increase my mileage above 5.5 mpg. The only thing that consistently worked, was to use an upper cylinder lubricant in the correct amounts. I used a gallon of Lucas, or 1/2 gallon of 2-stroke oil for approximately 300 gals. They were the only products that consistently raised my fuel mileage and quieted the engine down. However, since 2-stroke oil doesn't have an injector cleaner, I had to put that in, either as a dedicated cleaner, or switch to the actual Lucas (or USA Lube) at least once every six fillups. ATF made no difference on my fuel mileage or quieting down the engine, but worked as an injector cleaner, in the right amounts. Unfortunately, the ultra low sulfur diesel does not perform as well on our older MBZ or heavy-duty truck engines, necessitating a regular dose of upper cylinder lubricant. However, I have noticed that Bio-diesel does quiet things down, if at least B11, but didn't make a difference in mileage, and maybe a bit less power."

You'll notice that the ratio of 2 stroke oil in that study was 200:1 instead of the recommended 1 oz per gallon 128:1. That would surely put it much closer to the top of the list. I've been using it for years & am convinced it works.

Get some BIO and mix it at a minimum of 2%. I bought some BIO a while back (~15 gal @ $3/gal) and still have it 1.5 years later.

Try Amsoil's Cetane boost. I run it in my truck, the diesel benzes, and all my farm tractors. It's good stuff.

You bring up a GREAT point that hasnt been mentioned before! Indeed, if the ratio was the "more correct" one that most people typically use, the results would very likely have been more favorable.

how do you filter it? I would like to start doing that. I run M1 in my car and it would be nice to have a secondary use for the synthetic oil.

I tried 1 Quart in the Fuel Tank of my Volvo Diesel; don't remember what the Tank holds; it made my Exhaust stink.
The Volvo Engine block was overhauled (meaning I have almost like new compression) and it has Squish type prechambers; so it actually burns the Fuel much better than my Mercedes would.

There is a vendor on eBay that sells "sock type" filters that are 1 micron rated. You can get three of these for 20 bucks. Pour the used oil thru this filter a few times, just to be sure.

Crazy thought here - will synthetic oil burn like dino oil?

Just wondering out loud.

2 Stroke Oil & Milage

Well checked the mileage at fill up and it is still sitting about 26 mpg, No big change....But I sure like how quiet, smooth & strong the motor sounds and runs.

Thanks all for the input,,,Classic stuff from this club. I love it.

Well for me and my old 603 its going to be "a little shot of 2 stroke" at fill ups. Glad to know I'm not killing it!

P.S. Funny thing is that for the last forty years and dozens of vehicles I've eyballed a lot of magic fixs in a bottle, fell for many, only to find that same the stuff I carried in my backpack in the 70's for my stinky old Kawasaki 90cc 2 stroke dirt bike would make my Mercedes of all things happy...Go figure
