Need advice gear shifter face plate removal

Uhmm silly question, before I break something, what is the proper procedure for removing the top gear shifter cover see attached photos,, I have removed the 2 plastic pins at the front but the cover is still stuck.. I do not want to force it ,, it is 29 degrees F here and plastic is brittle. I have a new gear shifter knob, / shaft to replace the old one . And I want to refinish the center console cover too. It needs a good cleaning,, dog hair and other fungus hiding in there, 1987 300 SDL,,, ps most of the light bulbs are going to get replaced also. ty and cheers. DDClick image for larger version

Try this...

1) Wait for warmer weather. It's not but a few weeks away.

2) Use a Shop Vac to get the hair and dirt out so you can see the screws

3) Take a long Phillips head screwdriver and poke around the places where you suspect screws are on the bottom and side areas. If the shoe fits, turn it.

4) If you're changing bulbs, which I just did on my car recently (maybe yours won't need this, but better to be prepared), go to a few restaurants over the next week, and get different diameter straws. A small diameter will be what you want, to fit tightly over the bulb, so you can pull it straight out.

Good luck.

Hello Dave, did you ever complete this job? I need to do the same thing and I would appreciate any lessons learned. It was a much easier job on my W124 but on my 87 300SDL the space is way too tight on the sides to remove the whole thing. Thanks in advance.
