1976 240d motor mounts

so i need to replace the motor mounts in my 240d. i get really bad vibrating (especially when cold) at idle. The vibration is not as bad when the car is in gear (automatic) or if i push on the engine to the passenger side by hand. so my question is do i have to remove the arm that is bolted to the engine? it seems like it is right in the way of one of the allen bolts that hold the mount to the sub-frame. i have seen members that have removed the entire sub-frame and that almost seems easier. also how hard is it to change the engine damper? would i be able to do this without taking the motor mounts out? i don't really want to change it unless i have to but if it is easier to do at the same time as the mounts i might as well.
thanks,
john

To change the motor mount you need to jack up the engine with a jack and a piece of wood to protect the pan. ONce it is up you will have room to operate on the motor mount. You don't need to remove the arm from the engine.

The shock should be easy to change too but you may have to grip the stem with vice grips.

The Factory Motor Mounts are made by Phoenix. Lemforder boxes the Phoenix Motor Mounts and sells them under their name.
Bought from Mercedes the Motor Mounts are around $75.

Added later: I have looked around a little and cannot find any Lemforder Motor Mounts for a 76 240D.

Unforunately Motor and Transmission mounts can be only part of The Cure for shaking.

On mine a Valve Adjustment and rebuilding the Injectors took away about 85% of the shaking on mine.

Is a 76 240D a W123 or a W115?
