Oil for door hinges

Hi,

There has been a lot of discussion in the past about oil being the right lube for door hinges. I know I have seen it with my own eyes in MB documentation, but cannot track the source. I have looked at maintenance procedure 7220, but my current copy is a 1989 update, and says grease.

It does maintain that hinges on the tailgate on T models get oil.

Where was the source of the oil spec for lubing hinges?

Thanks!

I would think that it wouldn't matter too much. It's not a high friction point, as long as you keep it lubed. I use wheel bearing grease in mine, but you have to have the special grease zerk tool.

I am not looking for what lubricant to use, rather where MB stated that oil was the correct lubricant for door hinges on w123 cars.

Everything I've seen shows grease for lubrication up to '91. Here is what Samstag Sales has: Mercedes Tools - Mercedes Benz Special Tools & Repair Information-Tool look for "door grease gun". Even better is this little jewel, that I use, from Northern Tool:Oregon Premium Steel Grease Gun, Model# 110534 | Grease Guns + Accessories | Northern Tool + Equipment

Their even is a grease fitting on the hinge itself, don't know how oil would wick its way into the hinge pins (unless you soaked it). At times, I would take the FSM with a grain of salt as is was translated into english by non-techanical folk. I've seen similar errors when we outsourced translation of our aircraft maintenance manuals...

It's a non-critical part, I wouldn't go crazy trying to find exactly what MB specs.
