1983 300CD Driveshaft

On my 83 300CD, there is a slight vibration in the body of the car between 40 & 45 mph. The vibration goes away after 45 & is silky smooth. My tech says the univeral joints in the driveshaft need replacing. He said the shaft must be rebuilt. I have already replaced the center support/bearing & the flex disk. Three questions:

1. I am assuming it is not possible for a good shop to replace just the UV joints (like in most cars) and it MUST be rebuilt by a company that rebuilds driveshafts?

2. Is one of the 2 driveshaft parts on the 300CD the same (length) as on a 4 door 300D turbo (same year, etc.)?

3. Tech said usually one of the 2 driveshafts gives the most trouble. Anyone know which one he is talking about?

Thanks again!

Richard

Well it is the long rear shaft that has the joint. They are a special joint, they can be rebuilt but not easily replaced like the typical "U" joint. It probably could need rebuilding and it might solve your vibration. But it also could be that what you are feeling are power pulses from the engine at that critical speed, (rpm's) Are your engine mounts in good shape. If they are old and messed up, I would replace them first.

Might think about the differential mount as well. If it's tired out you could be getting some vibration. If you do the motor mounts do the trans mount as well.

I just replace the U-joint on our 80 240D. sent it to a drive line shop that does the MB drive lines. not all shops will do it, and or don`t have the equipment to balance them etc.

The shop replaced the center support bearing, U-joint and the sleve in each end of the shafts. the joint they replaced it with has the clips and a zerk fitting.

The Metal around the U-joint Cups are Staked/Mushed in and prevents easy replacement of the U-joint.
In the newer of the threads below some places to send the Drive Shaft to rebuild it are mantioned. (If it actually needs to be rebuilt; have someone else check the Driveshaft Support Bearing.)

One source that sells OEM parts online had the below.
Part Number 1234104802
Part Name DRIVE SHAFT
MSRP $600.00
Online Price $450.00

I do not know what the Shipping would be and the Original Drive Shaft is going to come with a Staked in U-joint.
Some of the Drive Shaft Rebuilders do a mod with a replacable U-joint and also install an new Drive Shaft Bearing Support. However, if there is no rebuilder in your area you may end up paying shipping to and from the Rebuilder.
